A team member's fear of failure is stifling creativity. How can you empower them to contribute effectively?

In an organization and team where trust has not been sufficiently built, team members only perform what is expected of them. They refrain from adding new and different perspectives and from taking risks because they fear that if the risk results in a negative outcome, they will not be supported by the team leader or the organization. Therefore, for team members to perform at their maximum potential and see opportunities rather than risks in unexpected situations based on different perspectives, it is essential that they trust their team leader and the organization.

By creating a trusting atmosphere, team members feel empowered to contribute creatively and take calculated risks, driving effective collaboration and innovation.

Cultivating a culture of trust is the first step for a person to let in to help other. For example whenever I have faced such a situation with my team members I have always tried to create an environment where they feel like they can come to me and open up regarding all their issues that they are facing and that will remain with me safely and secretly. They trust me! One need to open up their arms as a friend to let others know that the person is trustworthy.

In my view, fostering trust indeed sets the stage for a “Holistic” team dynamic. However, let's not overlook the profound impact of self-compassion in this context. When we embrace our humanity, understanding that mistakes are opportunities for growth, we tap into a reservoir of resilience. By merging trust with self-compassion, we elevate our journey towards Spiritual Intelligence, where fear of failure transforms into a catalyst for personal and collective evolution.

Trust is absolutely essential as a first step but to truly deal with a fear of failure requires internal transformation of the person. While changing approaches as a leader is helpful, it’s most important to help the individual understand the root of their fear. If the fear is justified then it won’t be eliminated until the root cause is addressed. Then the individual must be coached through the best wisest way for them to address and re-wire this fear for the future.

Free minds and hearts first, productive hands will follow. Open communication channels and true vulnerability permissions from leadership are essential. The trust dividends for teams pay exponentially.

Provide constructive feedback and support to team members, emphasizing improvement over fault-finding. Foster a safe environment where ideas are freely shared and explored. This is your job as a leader to create an environment with psychological safety that enables people to be able to make mistakes without fear of repercussions. You also need to lead by example and model vulnerabilities, sharing mistakes you have made as well as what you have learned from those experiences.

Many a times we fail to accept that we are humas and are liable to do mistakes. This one thing if accepted by seniors or top management can actually help the team members in understanding that they can open up their creativity box and csn contribute above and beyond what is done generally without having a fear of failing. A sense that every failure teaches us something and actually helps us in our development should be inculcated. Team leaders should instill positive attitude in team members mindset that a single person won't be harassed for the failure but the whole team will take the responsibility and will try to return the best against such failure.

Many a times we fail to take ownership of the failure that a team member has done or may do. We are ready with a finger pointing to that person. Instead of this as a team leader, he/she should step in to take the ownership of the failure and the whole team should ideally support the leader and help him/her take steps to correct instead of pointing out to a particular person. This always helps a person to overcome that fear of taking steps that may actually help the person, team and organisation but is not taken just due to fear.

Sometimes in personal or professional life we fail to understand one's capacity and create such unrealistic goals that are for sure to fail. And once that shatters we fail to understand that it was unrealistic in the first instance. Sitting with the team and understanding everyone's capacity, personal and professional goals and previous performances the leader should go ahead and make goals and get an approval from their members regarding it's viability.

Highlight the facts! Show them examples of where they have performed well. Be the person that highlights their accomplishments regularly. Don't be the leader that only focuses on what is wrong. Put your people in the spotlight every time they excel. Give them opportunities to help others do the same. Be the champion for them.

Pienso que en el liderazgo se ha visto el miedo al fracaso como una debilidad para un equipo, personalmente pienso que este tipo de sentimientos son insumo básico para aventurarse fuera de los límites establecidos, el miedo al fracaso nos provee de manera clara y típicamente específica las alertas rojas y nos.lleva a construir de manera creativa e intencional previniendo el fracaso obvio.

"Try to be a leader instead of a boss" is something that I would add at last to summarize the above points. Be a leader and step in and take responsibilities when team needs you and let the team take credit when you win.

Creatives can attach a lot of their self-worth to their creative output. So, although things like setting expectations for brainstorming sessions or praising their existing ideas can help, we need to start with mindset. This can’t be changed overnight but it can be encouraged as an organisation from this post forward.
