How do you test the effectiveness of your solutions?

Hypothesis testing can be very easy to implement as long as you have access to the right data. For example, if you made a change in the process and it was designed to impact a metric, you can state the null hypothesis saying that there is not change and alternative hypothesis stating that there is a change in the mean value of the metric. Afterwards, you can do two sample t-tests/z-tests to compare both. It’s important to explain hypothesis testing to the stakeholders in simpler terms and chose the P value wisely based on the criticality of the impact. I have used hypothesis testing to assess the impact of a process change on the throughput rate. For eg, by improving the pick path algorithm, we will expect a 10% increase in picking rate.

In IT projects, hypothesis testing proves invaluable. For instance, consider a website performance enhancement initiative. The hypothesis could be that optimizing server configurations will significantly improve page load times. By collecting data on page load speeds before and after the adjustments, statistical analysis through hypothesis testing validates whether the improvements are statistically significant. This method ensures that IT solutions are not only implemented but also rigorously evaluated, providing empirical evidence of their impact on process performance.

As a Process Improvement Engineer, I utilize hypothesis testing to evaluate the impact of implemented solutions. Control charts are valuable when you are working with a range of data and you care more about the a metric being within certain range instead of continuously increasing or decreasing. Understand your application and use the appropriate tools based on that. Upper control limit and lower control limited can be calculated based on internal quartile ranges. Often tools like python or excel have prebuilt functions/libraries that makes developing control charts easier.

Cost-benefit analysis assesses solution effectiveness by weighing incurred costs against realized benefits. In an IT context, for instance, implementing new software may involve initial expenses but result in increased productivity and long-term cost savings. If the benefits surpass the costs, the analysis indicates the solution's effectiveness. This approach serves as a financial metric, ensuring that the chosen solution is not only feasible but also economically advantageous. It provides a comprehensive evaluation of the overall impact and value proposition, aiding decision-makers in determining the effectiveness of the implemented solution.

For any initiative or a process improvement, sustaining change is the most difficult part. Sometimes, due to lack of ownership or motivation, you can have the greatest improvement fall through cracks. The C in DMAIC or last S in 5S highlights this. I would recommend identifying the stakeholder who owns the sustaining part of any initiative before beginning the work. This helps buy-in from the cross functional team and ensures that the value being created through the improvement can be sustained indefinitely and becomes an inherent part of the process. Sometimes, this takes regular check-ins, follow ups. Regardless, don’t underestimate the sustainability aspect of your initiative.
