Know your purpose - and know your audience. Whether you want to make people laugh, break the ice, lighten the mood or make a point, that'll look very different to different audiences. The language, material, and narrative structure you ultimately choose for your humour should all come down to a proper, in-depth understanding of who that humour is meant for.

Despite my attempts to inject humor into my classes, the audience, in this case, my students, rarely shows any laughter on their faces, making my comedic efforts fall flat. Before attempting humor, it's crucial to refine and fine-tune it meticulously, ensuring it's well-crafted. Timing is key, so deliver it at the opportune moment for the best impact.

Before incorporating humor into any interaction, it's essential to consider your intention and desired outcome. Whether aiming to elicit laughter, break the ice, lighten the mood, or convey a message, clarity on purpose informs the choice of humor style, tone, and content. For example, utilizing exaggeration, irony, or absurdity may be effective for eliciting laughter, while self-deprecation, anecdotes, or puns can serve well in breaking the ice. When aiming to make a point, sarcasm, satire, or parody may effectively convey the intended message. By aligning humor with intention, communicators can wield it as a powerful tool to engage, connect, and convey their message effectively.

A meaningful understanding of your audience means knowing who they are as humans. The best place to start is with as much information as possible about their values and beliefs. Understanding where they are today and where they'd like to go is also essential for humour that lands. Finally, audience understanding for humorous storytelling purposes is a lot like niching down - if your audience is a bunch of marketers or a room of realtors, your humour is likely to land better if you make the subject of your joke specific to them. It shows you understand them, and it serves a sense of connection between them, too.

Before adding jokes into your story or presentation, it's critical to know who your audience is and what their values are. Otherwise, you could risk telling or using a joke that either isn't relatable/doesn't resonate with them or, in the worst-case scenario, offends them. If you don't feel you know your audience well enough to discern this, you should take the time to understand them first.

Watch the room when you crack a joke. Immediate reactions tell you a lot. If you see heads nodding, smiles spreading, or hear laughter, you’re on the right track. Body language speaks volumes about how your humor is landing.

Expensive jokes have cost people valuable relationships and opportunities. A joke gone bad could have dire consequences. That’s why I’m the biggest advocate for using humor sparingly. Even when you might have done your research, it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks when we employ too much humor.

Want to evaluate your humor's impact? If your audience isn't laughing -> you know its bad! As someone who loves to inject humor into my stories, I would normally do research on the audience for my story before I speak certain jokes. I also found out that audience appreciate humor that is more related to their country and origin. For example, if I want better impact to humor for Japanese, I would introduce funny Japanese terms in my storyline.

Humour is a storytelling tool, and like all storytelling tools, there are a range of different factors you need to understand in order to make sure that tool is doing as much as possible for your story and overall message. The best way to practise the timing factor of humour is to say your joke or funny anecdote out loud. Even better is to practise it on a test audience. And remember: Context is key. Like with all other storytelling tools, you should only use humour when it serves your overall messaging goal.

There's a fairly simply trick to make a story more dynamic: be funny when they expect you to be serious, and serious when they expect you to be funny. The best place for a humorous aside is right after a tense or serious moment, and the best moment to deliver a heavy twist is right after you were being light-hearted. BUT, and that's an important but, you should stay true to the story and what you're trying to say. Don't add humorous asides just because you think you should, or make the story heavier for contrast. That's putting the medium above the meaning, and often an easy way to make a story feel forced or performatic.

Mastering comedic timing is crucial for maximizing the impact of your humor. Understand when to deliver punchlines or comedic elements for optimal effect. During stand-up comedy performances, I've learned that impeccable timing can turn an ordinary joke into a roaring success, while mistimed delivery can fall flat.

Timing represents one of the ingredients in my unique storytelling model - the sprout model - and with humour a great tool in storytelling it is important that your timing is considered. Where you choose to place your humour will and should align to where you feel it will be needed in your storytelling journey .... is it placed at the start to create a fast connection, is it used to lighten a certain point or context, or is it used to connect the audience collectively. Time it well - I have seen humour used in highly inappropriate situations and it has truly back fired!

Feedback on humour is pretty straightforward: either people laugh, they smile, they go blank or someone calls you to one side to tell you to go to HR 😅 If you're not sure how your humour is likely to be received, run the jokes or the story by someone who likes *a lot* and find out if you should try it or not. In doubt, leave it out.

If your joke isn't funny, you know from the quiet silence in the audience - when NO ONE is laughing. Another cue is the look on their faces. - If they are smiling, your humor got thru to them 50% - If they are grinning, it's probably 80% - If they are grimacing, then its probably 0%. Still, every bad joke is a learning opportunity. Learn from it, and do better next time.

Drawing from my experience in storytelling... I mean, drawing from my experience telling too many bad jokes, I can affirm that evaluating humor's impact is vital. How did your attempt land? What was the impact? How can it be refined? Even the best comedians test their material - starting small and over time building a collection informed by audience response. It's not just about giggles; it's about creating a connection and evoking [the right] emotions. Experiment with different styles and techniques, learn from others and practice continually. Remember, authenticity resonates with people, so always stay true to your voice while incorporating humor. And please, try not to suck.

Certainly! When crafting children's stories, sprinkling in a dash of humor can be like adding a sprinkle of magic. It not only captivates their attention but also turns valuable lessons into delightful adventures, making the learning experience more engaging and memorable.

One of my biggest superpowers is my sense of humour. My company is welcomed as a result of my sense of humour. I also get opportunities to pass on information, even the most difficult as my humour opens the door. Yes, sometimes, I have used humour at the wrong places causing embarrassments and jabs, but overall, humour has the following effect for me, 1. Humanizes me 2. Brightens the room 3. Gives me courage 4. Warms me into a conversation 5. Is an icebreaker. 6. Helps me see the alternative Given that I am naturally funny, I get away with most humorous comments. I believe humour is human, but if you are not naturally gifted, use it sparingly. Humour triumphs rigidity.

If you'd like to get better at using humour in your storytelling, consume humour. Watch professional standup shows. Read funny books. Follow funny people on social media. What kinds of stories do they tell? What narrative frameworks do they use? How do they leverage timing? By consuming funny stuff and trying it out, you will, over time, get better at using humour for professional storytelling purposes.

“Leave out that potty anecdote.” A speaker had sought out my feedback. “But people laughed!” “Yes. 3 people in an audience of over 100. A few people will always laugh, because they want to help you.” Yes, a few will laugh. A few people in the audience will be offended. Some people will think less of the speaker, for using adolescent humor. As an agent, I was well aware that some clients won’t book a speaker who tells such stories. Bottom line, if you’re a professional, be professional. Find better ways to be humorous.

I commend those who can use humor so well and tactfully. I equally commend those who would rather not practice humor. I think there is no right or wrong answer, and I say so because some people are naturally gifted with a sense of humor and some are not. I think the key callout here is your ability to deeply engage your audience and keep them captivated about the story you’re telling.

Watch and listen to others. Gaining inspiration for humour is a key part of the learning and growth process, and you can find it in many places. Likewise the variations in humour is significant, so double down in what aligns to your style and preference and explore there. Never forget though that you will have your own style which comes naturally to you - so try not to veer from that - more so enrich it by what you see around you.
