How do you choose insulation materials for different environments?

There are many factors to consider when choosing insulation material for a building. It is important to consider the type of space that needs to be insulated, the climate, the cost, the availability, the environmental impact, the durability, and the ease of installation when making a decision.

Polyurethane (PU) is widely used in automotive industry for vehicle. Most polyurethanes are thermosetting polymers and that means they do not melt when heated, which is especially important for vehicle and passenger safety. PU foams are low cost, light weight, maintain cabin temperatures, decrease the noise levels of exterior car sounds and damp vibrations.

Remember, if you're insulating pipework, your pipe will rest on a clamp or palm of sorts. If your pipe is insulated you'll need to have either a thermal bridge break or a foam block around the clamp that bulks up the density. Counting these is a nightmare so make sure you order clamps and blocks at the same time.

Durability: There are some products tagged as No-clad required. This is quite important because when you have say, exposed pipework on the outside of a building, you'll need to get cover for it, otherwise it will fall apart sooner or later.

All the insulators when used should not only behave as an insulator over a wide range of electric voltage but must strong mechanically. They shouldn't be affected by heat, atmosphere, chemical effects and should be free from deformation due to aging

Smooth fabrications and installation is important also to protect pipe or duct from outside hazard and for maintenance access. like a condensation, human eror, or wheater, or the other.

For environments where fire safety is a concern, materials with good fire resistance like rock wool or fiberglass may be suitable.

This is crucial for wall penetrations. Usually, there are provided details by the supplier of fire grout, or sleeves. They will have a product and a detail for each option of insulation that could encounter fire.

We need to read requirement from suplier about safety datasheet to consider the potential hazard, and risk. Follow right PPE whe we are doing installation for our safety.

This sounds fabulous on paper, but I haven't seen a contract (in my whole career) that deals with industrial contracting waste during install. If you order properly without any over-ordering, you'll reduce the amount of waste, but I don't think there's much value for the market if you consider this to be honest. the higher the specifications the more danger we or the environment will get. Keep use right PPE, smooth installation, and keep clean up on your table.

The properties of the material is always the go-to metric / deciding factor. But in my opinion, the practicality of sourcing, installation, product life cycle, capex, opex is more what are the determining factors. Likewise, material property is just a small cog in the asset we are building; as long the external enviroment doesn’t deteriorate or reduce the function detrimentally, it most likely always a go.

A guide for choosing insulating materials in real-life situations would go as follows: I. First, choose materials that have the necessary thermal conductivity. Start the selection with families of insulators that can do the job. II. Second, choose materials that can handle the other conditions at hand. Some materials must be fire resistant, some must withstand higher temperatures or mechanical loading, etc. III. Third, after screening materials that are up to the task, choose the least expensive one. One ought to take into consideration the cost of extracting the material afterwards, how easily it will be removed/repaired ("difficult" materials result in higher working costs). A final note; do not be afraid to be creative!

Consider the requirements of the system in question, is there a certain environment or need governing your choice of insulation? For example, if you have a rather large allowance of space for insulation materials, you can save on cost by bulking up.
