How do you choose between a majority and consensus decision-making model?

Use the majority model if the decision must be made in a compressed timeframe, and the decision is reversible. Beware, majority rule usually means you're voting with the Alpha in the room.

If outcomes between different alternatives are known, then the consensus model works very well. If outcomes are not known, such as investing in innovation, neither model works well. These should be business unit leader decisions to pursue tests that reveal commercial truth. Only then is the consensus model appropriate. If you use this model before testing, the only thing you know for sure is that the idea is not innovative. The consensus model is also most appropriate for irreversible decisions. These are decisions that are hard to reverse quickly, such as a long-term lease, acquiring a rival company, etc.

When choosing between decision-making models, ask yourself three questions: 1) Is this a decision where the outcomes are known or unknown? If known, use the consensus model. If unknown, don't use either model; make an executive decision to test and learn. Only then is the consensus model appropriate. 2) Is this a reversible or irreversible decision? If reversible, speed is your friend. If irreversible or hard to reverse, use the consensus model. Remember, in all irreversible decisions, if you don't know, you know. 3) When must this decision be made? If time is of the essence, use the majority model. No decision is often the worst decision.

There is seldom one best answer to the strategic questions that face organizations. Regardless of the decision-making model used, do not diffuse accountability. The ability to execute and pivot as unknowns become known is often what makes a decision "good." People support what they help create. If there isn't clear accountability and leaders can point to recommendations by consultants or "working as directed," then the battle is lost before it's begun.

I don't accept the premise of the question. As a leader you have to understand a simple concept from (dont be afraid) complex systems engineering. For a finite system (i.e. limited resources aka all organizations) for the system to be fully optimized, this means that some subsystems won't be. In other words equal deployment of resources accross all departments, the company will not produce at its greatest level of impact. It is critical for teams to understand why resources are being deployed the way they are. This is also where I will also note that as a leader you job is to professionally and passionately stand up for your team. This is done in private and if you, you must take ownership of the order whether you eith it or agreed or not
