In today's dynamic and ever-evolving workplace, investing in employee development and training is a critical strategy for success. Companies are increasingly turning to performance management systems to enhance their employee growth initiatives. But how exactly does it work, and how can it benefit both the organization and its employees? Especially, when leadership movement/transition maybe high or too involved to establish the company performance culture.

It is very important to align goals with the business needs. This can be done using S.M.A.R.T goals. Goals that are connected to a performance bonus will ensure that you have employees that are constantly motivated to approach these goals. A good performance management system will give you the ability to easily track it all. Win win! 🏆

An employee’s performance is a reflection of their leadership’s and team’s engagement. Performance development and enhancement should be ongoing vs just an annual or semiannual activity. Setting realistic and attainable goals, that align with the organization’s strategic objectives is essential. Incorporating training and professional development into an employee’s responsibilities is also key. Performance development is a team initiative, through peer support, mentoring, coaching and individual development. When the team succeeds, everyone succeeds and when a team member falls short, it is a negative impact on the team and is a direct reflection of their leadership’s ability to develop.

In my capacity as Director of Training and Development for one of the Sudanese institutions and after a thorough and continuous research in the development of the capabilities of individuals, I found that the best way to identify and quantify the needs of individuals is centred on the need to sit with staff or through a questionnaire containing two main points: First :- What kind of training does the employee like. II :- What kind of training does the direct manager or supervisor determine. III:- Refer to the need for veneers listed in the strategic plan. Finally, the need of the staff member, manager and founder is integrated and a training programme based on real need is designed.

I agree that identifying learning needs and opportunities are important for employee growth. We conducted a training needs assessment survey and discovered that our employees needed and wanted to be trained. We also implemented an individualized development plan for our employees. This is important because employees are able to communicated their needs directly to their supervisor. We hold workshops, and are also partnered with LinkedIn Learning to help promote professional development based on employees feedback and needs.

Through PM, employees are able to see the bigger picture, which motivates them to perform better. Proficient business leaders provide guidance to their employees on how to achieve their personal objectives effectively. Moreover, they also match their career aspirations with future business needs through effective performance evaluation, data analytics, and periodic feedback. It's an important tool for identifying learning needs, competency development, employee engagement, career development, workforce planning, and OD. It evolves over time with the business.

It's one thing to identify learning needs for the job, does this training need align with the person's growth plan and need too? Essentially, let's create some form of balance by being unselfish with providing a 360° development programs that works and benefits all.

After employing the best methods to improve productivity and performance, if evaluations and periodic assessments are not done intermittently and as when due, all efforts are no effort at all. Track all forms of interventions and close or mitigate setbacks as they arise.

To get the most of the training and development plan, you have to use an evaluation model helping you discover any potential issues or even helping you to catch any problem or get any mistakes during your process to achieve the results desired of your investment. One of the best models to evaluate the training process is The Kirkpatrick Model, or four levels of training evaluation. By using such model you can easily manage your process and measure your progress.

Managers and leaders have to ensure that progress is monitored because it shows the employee that you care about their growth. Employees are equally responsible for providing feedback to their supervisors as well. Weekly check-ins are important and will help monitor growth. Talk about goal setting and how to effectively set goals.

You have to read and master the ADDIE mode to get the desired outcome and to make sure that you are aligned to achieve your organization strategic goals.

While agreeing with all tips, I would strongly urge you all to please put 50% energy on Post training evaluations. My realtime learning is that we used to Tick mark the check box to meet number of trainings, to me if you ll evaluate at least 2 trainings after 1- 3 months in a structured manner. It will multiply outcome of your efforts. Remember post training evaluation is Not judgement. Its about helping on real ground. Stay blessed

I so wish this article was under a different category because calling it 'admin management' undermines the entire HR and people practice profession.

Walk the talk. If an organization's value is to develop employees, create a plan, identify training opportunities, pay for it, support the employee taking the time to learn, and document specifics to follow through within a timeline. After six months, evaluate if the employee is applying the new knowledge to their work. If not, explore why not. Unless the company supports learning as an employee benefit only, there has to be value for the employer as well. Set expectations up front. Behavioral changes take longer, but these can still be measured. It's all about the actions taken, so employees can see and feel the company cares about their growth.

Make sure you as a manager act on the agreed outcomes of any performance process. Nudge the employee to take action. Only too often the performance review discussions are held just to "be in line with the process" and to tick a box and be done with it. There are real people in every process, and it is important that specific actions are taken to actually transform the agreed plans into specific L&D actions. And don't tell your employees half way through that there is no more budget left!
