For example, your organization can't say they're inclusive unless they're okay with having same-sex couples enroll in their employee health benefit program, similar to the option available for opposite-sex couples.

Many organisations consider LGBTQI inclusion as a month long activity during the pride month. Instead of this approach of organisations move towards a year round approach. Companies do play a pivotal role in making strong allies for queer folks and that can only be done when culture of inclusion and DEI activities go beyound the pride month.

Promoting genuine diversity among queer individuals involves not only embracing various identities but also fostering a spectrum of perspectives. It goes beyond educating high-level executives; entry-level employees, guards, cab drivers, and helpers should also be equipped with knowledge. Furthermore, empowering queer voices is essential—companies should refrain from assuming the role of the sole authority on change and instead allow queer individuals to spearhead their narratives.

Challenging stereotypes and bias also means affirming others who you witness speaking up against stereotypes and bias, to help share the load together and to make inclusion more organizational-wide versus the task of a select few.

When it comes to demonstrating commitment, workplaces must make diversity, equity and inclusion an integral part of their DNA. Zero tolerance towards unsafe, discriminatory and harmful behaviour must be maintained by creating systems of accountability. Leaders must lead by example, making safety and inclusion a priority in their decision making. Moreover, the organization should mandate comprehensive sensitivity training for all employees, encompassing a wide spectrum of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues, including LGBTQ concerns, as well as other critical areas like disability, POSH (sexual harassment policies), etc.

Identify the existing (or lack of) safety cues that help create safe and welcoming organizations for LGBTQ folks. For example, is sharing pronouns in website bios, meetings/introductions, and in email signatures a common practice across your organization? Are HR policies in place to support trans employees with to access to benefits, gender-affirming healthcare, and time off? Does your organization hire and promote LGBTQ folks to leadership positions? An audit can help you identify what safety cues exist (i.e., what LGBTQ folks look for to feel safe and welcomed). It’s a starting point for your next step which is implementing more safety cues across your organization, and weaving them into the culture of your organization

In my experience, leading by example is the key to drive any kind of change in an organisation. A firm commitment from the leadership team towards inclusive behaviour through building awareness, having regular discussions and addressing existing gaps is important to set the right example.

Establish LGBTQ employee resource groups, review and revise benefits to ensure inclusivity, and actively address microaggressions. It is of utmost importance to become aware of your different identities and the privileges or lack of it emanating out of them. This will help you understand the needs of the underprivileged class and help build inclusion in an equitable way.

It's important to be inquisitive and be confident and ask questions. You need to be brave to have conversations with members of the community and vulnerable. It's ok to get things wrong but important to listen and learn. As long as the right intent is there within a conversation within a psychologically safe environment everyone can learn, improve and develop their understanding and behaviour.

Promoting inclusion for people from the community is a long-long road. A few things one can consider includes: - Advocating for gender neutral spaces like washrooms - Sensitization workshops and programs to work with employees at the grass root level - Mental Health support - Strong policies like 'Zero tolerance to Homophobia, Transphobia' to foster ideals implicitly and explicitly - Little things like introducing oneself and others using pronouns It's the little changes that add to major differences!

We should lead by example, demonstrate respect, and encourage diversity in decision-making processes and emphasize the importance of understanding different perspectives and create policies that explicitly support LGBTQ rights and inclusivity. I think if you create an environment like this community or this group of people need to be respected, its a wrong message. Because everyone is aware and society is more inclusive now. Rather there should be no special identification associated with any person, everyone is by default to be respected and be inclusive towards each other regardless of their identity. So people are already aware and don’t need more education but only the right mindset to move above gender or any kind of differences. It’s more of hiring the people with right mindset these days I think.

To foster an inclusive culture, you need to model and encourage inclusive behaviors, such as listening, empathizing, respecting and collaborating. A safe and supportive space where everyone can express their opinions, ideas, and concerns without fear of judgement and retaliation.
