I try to understand what made them look for another offer. By knowing their aspirations, TA can be able to emphasize on the value their company is bringing and is aligned to candidate’s career goals. Compare the offers, I personally specify the work culture, career path and flexibility. Prepare a data and collaborate with stakeholders to see the possibility of counteroffer. Building a strong rapport with candidates is crucial, but it's equally important not to oversell. Once candidates have been provided with a clear understanding of the value company brings to the table, it's important to give them sufficient time to consider and evaluate the offers to decide on their own terms which ensures their commitment to working for the long term.

Prevent: Build relationships, offer competitive packages, highlight unique value. React: Listen, reaffirm offer, be transparent, focus on strengths, respond promptly, stay professional. During the first call, find out what's motivating their job search: flexibility, more impact, cooler products, etc. Throughout the process, position the role and company as the answer. During the close / offer call, start with that original pain point before you get to the details of your offer - this new role is the answer to that problem (it should also be paying them more money too). Then if they get a counter offer, call them and try to understand how they're evaluating the counter. Will they truly get that additional impact / independence / growth, or are those empty promises to try to get them to stay? Very likely none of those underlying motivations will change if they stay. Counter offers are like gas station sushi. Not worth it

Ask the question of what do you think your employer will say if you were to give your notice? What would keep you there if they did present a counteroffer? Continue to circle back to their motivations for leaving with the highlight of "if it hasn't happened yet, what assurances do you have that it will change/ happen in the future"?

The challenge I have with counter offers is that they, in general, correctly reward the candidate for the impact they offer to a business, and yet expose the business for not having paid them in line with that impact to date. For a number of candidates that I speak to, this is exactly how that counter offer is recieved. For those who are motivated by money or level, rather than day-to-day challenges with the role/firm, these counter offers are quite understandably met more positively.

Use your emotional intelligence and remain factual and calm. While staying factual, have them compare the offers with the advantages and disadvantages. Once this is done, you enable them to see more clearly and can highlight an advantage that may not be obvious at first glance. Stay engaged with the talent even after an offer has been extended. Continue to nurture the relationship and address any concerns or questions they may have to ensure a smooth transition.

It's important to understand and address the candidates pain points. Every candidate has specific things they've dealt with in their past work history so they're looking for a new role/company that has successfully implemented solutions. Discussing those pain points can help make the candidate more vulnerable to honestly talk about what they're looking for and what's attractive about the other offer. From there you can help emphasize why your role/company is the best fit. Also, if you're able to, be open to adjusting the original offer to meet the candidate halfway.

Counteroffers are attractive and creates less of an "unknown" in terms of new company, new culture, new people. But it actually creates a further state of unknown of what is actually going to change for me if I stay here? I've had candidates take extremely attractive counter offers before but with increased monetary amounts you would think would come increased responsibility or different types of work which many times is not there. This is a bandaid solution for your employer and may not lead to the long term growth you are expecting unless they can also provide a clear road map and path of execution which will lead to the results that warrant the increase in salary or change in title

I had this happen yesterday. - Initially, the candidate said they were no longer interested, found other offer so… - I confirmed where the offer was from - I gave them two options 1. to continue to speak with me to learn more about my opportunity for possibility of interview with HM (depending on the screen) 2. To continue to do the phone screen and we will hold their application for future opportunities - I didn’t give them the option to get off the phone because I could hear they were clearly still interested. I kept it cool, went over some key features/benefits of the role and from there the job sold itself. - Sometimes (not always) recruiters need to assume the candidate wants the job even if they say differently (feel it out)

Open and immediate communication is key. I discuss the possibility of a counter offer before they even receive an offer from my client. Basically, “it’s coming, so let’s go over again why you even had this conversation with me in the first place.” We discuss what’s missing from their current role, culture, leader, etc that’s making them even interested in leaving (I.e. the pain point).
