The Scrum Master can make the introspective more engaging and fun by starting with ice-breaker sessions and introducing different techniques like sail-boat, sad-mad-glad, stop, start, continue etc. Discuss on objectives and ensure there are actionable items at the end of the retrospective. Publish the action items with assign task owners Also it is essential to celebrate success so the team is motivated and inspired. The well known & official pillars of SCRUM (aside from Focus, Respect, Openness, Commitment & Courage) are AIT (Adaptation, Inspection & Transparency) & there are co-dependencies between these to enable maximized interoperability. A facet of experimentation can be derived from adaption to ever-evolving variables, such as business requirements. Adaption is essential, but not without risk so enacting sound judgement with a regime of strategic risk management is essential for minimizing failures that can't be learned from.

Building trust is key to having good retros. My preference is to have two sessions, one classic retro per month, mainly focused on reflecting on what's new and good for our group or externally and also what is slowing us down that we need to take action on. There are different techniques to provoke a deeper level of feedback in this kind of session, but nothing as powerful that creates trust among colleagues as sharing what you learn to others recurrently. That leads us to our Knowledge-Sharing meeting on a weekly basis where people present their findings in a concise way on their particular experiments eg hypotheses, test results, stakeholders' feedback, etc the ones that went well but also the bets that ended up with no return.

You need to be willing to hear things you do not want to hear. Even feedback that you might not consider to be true needs to be dealt with. Polite honesty within a team is a must.

Next steps from lessons learnt from retrospectives: 1. Not every single lesson captured from the current retrospective may be applicable in the next sprint cycle - the lessons learnt must be archived in a central shared repository and reviewed in subsequent retrospectives 2. Lessons learnt must be captured and structured objectively for ease of reference i.e. for adaptation for subsequent sprints: (i) what issue(s) when wrong? (ii) what is the action plan that is needed to avoid or prevent it? (iii) what are the challenges (if any) to creating an action plan to avoid the issue(s)

Failures are often a taboo, you've got to change that to learn from them. Treating things as experiments means that you know upfront what success looks like and what doesn't. You can say that and whether the experiment passed or not. And no matter the result, you learn. Create a habit of sharing experiments results, learnings, and discoveries. That simplifies talking about what didn't work as expected. The goal isn't talking about failure, but learning from what didn't work and to create something that delivers value for both customers and the business.

It's all about actionable items. I work with so many teams and enter so many organizations that say we have retrospectives set up and we do this and we do that. Anyone can run a retrospective through using the different canvases, of course the facilitation techniques differ, but if you conduct a below average retrospective in terms of facilitation but have an action plan clear enough to address whatever items were raised in the retrospective and add them to your backlog and start acting on such items from one sprint to the other creating a clear improvement plan is far much better than someone who facilitates an excellent retrospective asking all the right questions and great documentation but nothing moves forward up to speed.
