How can you ensure that your machine learning models are aligned with human rights and dignity?

Considering the challenge of building any ML model, it's crucial to address bias as a significant risk to human rights and dignity. Concepts like ethics and personal values play a fundamental role in any development. Additionally, identifying gender gaps and the bias that may influence these models is crucial to ensuring their fairness and reliability.

Ethical and responsible AI should be non-negotiable requirements since day '0' and embedded by design, no matter which context the LLMs will be targeting. Concepts such as accountability, inclusiveness, reliability and safety, fairness, transparency, and privacy and security are key aspects in any AI development.

It is important to research how other leading companies are implementing these principles. For example, Google has developed several ML fairness toolkits to avoid some issues. Other companies like IBM have bias detection methods in which the AI is intentionally tested on bias early on in its development to avoid harder to remove bias farther down the line. If you first understand the context of your model and its potential bias, choosing methods like these will be easier as you can implement them earlier on. Avoiding bias is far easier than removing it later.

I would say, understanding the context is very important when developing machine learning models. I am not only talking about the technical aspects, but mainly what we need to put effort to understand is the societal and ethical implications. First, we need to consider how the model will be used, who it will affect, and what potential biases it might introduce. This requires a deep understanding of the problem domain, the data, and the potential consequences of the model's decisions. Agree, it's a complex task and nobody should take it lightly when designing models, because it's crucial to ensure that our models respect human rights and dignity.

I often coach my clients on the importance of a term I used called "Design Justice" and it refers to the need for fairness and transparency as soon as the idea is formed and the design begins. I joke that you don't want to wait until after deployment to read how your solution amplified bias through memes you see on Reddit. I have 3 suggestions for helping you think about how you can design with fairness, transparency and explainability in mind. 1. Build inclusive teams, not just ethnically inclusive and gender diverse, but neurodiversity. 2. Engage UX researchers and designers early and often. 3. Don't let the excitement of a new product keep you from asking who it could hurt or what could go wrong.

This indicates a need for heightened caution and responsibility in model development. Thats why the fairness and transparency should be at the heart of every machine learning model.

Privacy and security are fundamental human rights, and we must respect! Especially, we must respect them in all our machine learning models. All starts with the data we use. What I mean by that is we need to ensure that the data we use is collected and processed ethically, that it's stored securely, and that it's used only for the intended purposes. We also need all necessary actions to our best ability to ensure that the model's predictions don't infringe on individuals' privacy or security. I understand it's not that easy and it's a delicate balance, but it is the one we must strive to maintain.

Privacy and security has to be at the centre. As much as there is a massive effort to move quickly in the startup space, when creating products that can have a massive effect on humans, for me it’s better safe than sorry.
