Instill a workplace safety culture of unsafe reporting without fear, by first providing a psychological safe workplace and secondly rewarding to encourage such reporting.

Absolutely, leading by example in safety extends beyond top-level leadership. Mid-level leaders play a crucial role in reinforcing safety practices. Their commitment to and demonstration of safety protocols influence their teams, fostering a culture of responsibility and awareness at all levels of the organization.

‘Consistent’ messaging ‘Unwavering’ commitment ‘Personal’ demonstration These are the only way to ‘Effectively’ lead a safety culture building exercise. Rest will automatically follow !

In my opinion, being an exemplary leader alone is not enough for a business. You must create leaders who will look like you. For this, create security teams of employees and managers. Give them monthly and yearly goals. Reward them according to their performance! This way, you will be able to spread the safety culture from top to bottom.

To improve safety at workplace you have to involve people. For getting involvement first of you have to motivate them to listen to you, they should recognise you as their well wisher. Start with small small improvement, enjoy the results. Sustain your activities.

Each and everyone of us is responsible for our own safety, we as leaders is our job to recognized hazards in the work place, help our peers understand how to mitigate those hazards. As leaders we have to make our employees understand that working safe can have a positive or negative impact their lives, if you work safe you go home to your love ones, if you don't, you probably never see them again.

This is extremely important factor. Most organizations develop Safety culture ONLY if it’s driven from top. Unless senior most people in the organization are convinced about criticality of Safety of their people and push hard to improve Safety standards, it’s not possible to drive Safety culture across the company. Sometime, top leaders are driving Safety only for the sake of industry and clients pressure, but that does not creat true Safety culture unless he or she is seriously LEADING BY AN EXAMPLE.

A very good two-way communication creates a very safe working environment. This can be done by creating an atmosphere where workers can report and communicate their grievances without any form of reprisals and barriers. Workers should know their role in the achieving the company’s policies and objectives and the need to achieve those objectives.

Crear entornos seguros, donde los colaboradores se sientan libres de opinar y hablar sin ningún tipo de miedo, siendo escuchados activamente, y recogiendo esas inquietudes, posibles problemas, para estudiar medidas y acciones de mejora. I've recently implemented safety campaign emails in addition to regular in-person visits to departments in my hospital. This strategy aims to raise awareness about various safety hazards, such as winter weather risks, and demonstrate proactive steps to mitigate these issues. The emails serve as a clear and regular communication method to keep employees informed and engaged in safety practices.

Both spoken and written communication is critical in communication . Spoke communication lies in the tone as explaining things clearly and with care and compassion, employee have more confidence and trust in us and are more likely to take our advice. Appropriate language with correct terminology shall be applied to team /workers considering their literacy background Written communication must be made be simple ,clear and concise to ensure the message sent across to target audience in the workplace.

There is a technique referred to as a pulse check. Where at regular intervals you check in to see the teams general feeling towards health and safety. This can be through surveys, walk arounds and toolbox talks. Face to face check ins offer benefits over surveys as it allows the senior management to become more hands on with their team. It offers a truer reflection on the state of the teams mindset as you can better observe their responses rather than just reading a mandatory feedback form. These types of event also offer two way feedback streams. You not only provide your insight to your team but understand their issues too. This type of relationship with a team helps build trust and allows you to show you are really interested.

I have seen two way communication working effectively. No blame culture is also playing key role from the team. It give free platform to report hazard observations and near misses without any fear of blaming. Communication plays key role in health abd safety and we must move away from normalising this culture of thinking some incidents need more attention than other's. It doesn't matter how small matter look like, respond to concern and give same approach as big matter.

It is always better to develop competent workers. Trained does not equal competent. My definition of competence is: - someone I can send to do a job and I don’t need to oversee their work - they can teach another person to do the work correctly - they can identify when things are starting to go wrong and can address issues before they become a problem. For example, when driving your car, you feel a new vibration that wasn’t there before, you are driving in winter conditions and stop to check your wheels. There is snow buildup in the rims throwing off the wheel balance so you clear out the snow and the vibration is gone. You were competent at the task, identified a change, and corrected it before it became a problem.

Safety officers/managers should not neglect the importance of regular training. While the workplace shall have an safety introduction session for all new comers, it's crucial to have refreshment courses for all workers. This helps workers to master the safety rules and elevate the awareness about the potential hazards.

One valuable point I gathered from role as safety professional is the significance of continuous education and training in maintaining a safe work environment. It emphasized the need to equip employees with updated knowledge and resources to prevent accidents and adapt to changes in the workplace. Regularly refreshing training not only ensures everyone stays informed about safety measures but also acknowledges the dynamic nature of work environments, equipment, and regulations. Furthermore, recognizing and rewarding employees for their safety contributions encourages a proactive safety culture and motivates ongoing engagement with safety protocols. Is this correct?

In my expression , I solely believe in nurturing employees based on skills ,knowledge and competency . Training must be made mandatory in order for the employee to understand what job they are undertaking and the risk associated to that job task. Refresher and awareness course must be regularized in order for employee never attempt to take short and prevent complacency . Training is an essence to safety culture

Monitoring and evaluation of safety performance also involves better understanding of the key leading indicators, this helps with proactive approach in addressing safety performance issues rather than being reactive. As part of continuous improvement, businesses should enforce leadership visibility and RCA’s (Root Cause Analysis/ 5 WHY’s) these contribute a lot to improving safety performance, monitoring and evaluation.

This is the part where the standard of safety is met. Sometimes it takes experience to mention that consistency and repetition is also important to apply to safety foundations. Always on jobs I've had in my career, we've had to step back for safety, safety meetings, reports, check off lists, etc. When something is done repetitively, consistently, it's engraved everyday. Employers get on the band wagon for safety then after a while it's no big deal. Being diligent and responsible for your teammates is so important. To say everybody goes home safe is key.

This is an area that I very often see neglected by SMEs. I think because it is seen as a burden - administration with no production value. In fact, performance measuring safety supports productivity and reduces other burdens including managing retention and training needs. A well-thought out set of performance measures provides focus for the health and safety committee and supports managers and supervisors output goals. It also helps workers feel valued...

Safety cannot be limited to fulfilling the legal obligations, there is no book which can 100% assure that accident cannot happen but it only can limit the chances of accidents by applying tried and tested methods, rather safety is a belief which could be different from person to person, could be due to the abilities, the nature, education, competency, the physical & mental capabilities. The no. of educational seminars conducted, the stakeholders meetings, education to the workers and supervisors, non compliance rectification, all plays a crucial role in quantifying how well the safety is being formulated, but the actual performance of a safety professional shall only be measured with the number of accidents major or minor happened.

There are so many ways to play the system with incident statistics to the point that they are not always valuable. If you want to measure safety, go to the field and see if your supervisors are engaged. Confirm they are coaching and mentoring their workers. Talk to your workforce and find out what road blocks are making it hard to achieve safe outcomes. Then help them remove the road blocks. Ask the 4 Ds and prepare to be humbled. What is Dumb What is Different What is Difficult What is Dangerous If you identify anything that meets 3 or 4 of the Ds, this is an amazing leading indicator. Go fix it. If you want good good leading indicators measure supervisor engagement and how often leaders engage the workers to find the 4 Ds.

Both lagging and leading indicators should be used. Lagging indicators generally track worker exposures and injuries that have already occurred. Leading indicators track how well various aspects of the program have been implemented and reflect steps taken to prevent injuries or illnesses before they occur.

O monitoramento dos treinamentos também é necessário para saber e identificar e corrigir as lacunas que possam aparecer. Por mais que tenham treinamentos constantes o monitoramento das ações são e sempre serão necessárias.

Find out what frustrates your workers and implement learning teams to find solutions. You can (and should) also use learning teams to learn from incidents. Chances are that your root causes are not the root at all and your corrective actions don’t actually fix the problem. Use a learning team instead and the people actually doing the work will help you find the solutions. People aren’t the problem, they are the solution.

As human beings we are all prone to 'making mistakes' Instead of considering them as 'mistakes' consider them as learning opportunities.

Reporting near miss incidents and preparing preventive action plan is also an effective way of continual improvement. For achieving it first team should be encouraged to report every near miss incidents.

Embracing mistakes as learning opportunities is pivotal in establishing a safe work environment. Recognizing that errors can occur allows for valuable lessons. We should investigate the causes of safety incidents, learning from them to prevent their repetition. Sharing these insights among our team and stakeholders fosters a culture of improvement. Implementing these lessons into safety policies ensures a workplace that prioritizes growth through learning from past mistakes.

When striving for improvement, be mindful that any implemented changes do not result in safety clutter. In safety, adding a new requirement is easy, but removing one is extremely difficult. Leaders must employ critical thinking when considering new improvements, ensuring they take into account the following, particularly regarding administrative control measures: - Will this genuinely enhance safety? - Do you have buy-in from the individuals at the forefront of the work? Do they believe it will contribute to their safety?

Lessons to be learned (incidents, accidents, injury and etc.) should be shared and evaluated from management to support level to avoid reoccurrence and improve safety on working place. Root cause and analysis are required for each case and nothing should be avoided as r neglected.

• Own up to it. You have to hold yourself accountable and take responsibility for the mistake. • Show remorse. • Figure out what happened. • Fix it. • Create a new process. • Take training.

Creating decent working conditions for all working groups and follow principles of Continuus improvements can bridge the gap between loss and gain in the concepts of occupational health and safety.

Develop a habit of saying 'We' and not 'You' when something goes wrong... (Develop and Prioritise collective responsibility.) When something goes wrong, most of us will seek to deflect blame, and find an excuse as to why we weren't at fault. Those of us in leadership roles have a duty to overcome this urge, and must seek to understand without prejudice (easy to say, not so easy to do). If we create an environment where people use language such as 'what did WE do wrong' or 'How could WE do better', rather than 'what did YOU do wrong' We will likely create a more open and honest workplace, and get to the 'truth' a lot faster, with less friction, and leading to more sustainable, collaborative outcomes.
