In my viewpoint, an SEL course taught before elementary graduation and again at middle school graduation, would provide an overall improvement in the school climate when compared to today's battlegrounds of lock downs, and lock outs.

"It takes a village to raise a child," where the "village" is the sum of all stakeholders. Social and Emotional Learning is just as important to our students and children as the academic 3 Rs, and parents need to engage with educators to understand and support the initiative. SEL works best when the family implements its concepts at home and in the community.

It has been commonly held that an SEL course was only for students with an IEP goal, connected to a diagnosis of Emotional Disturbance or Severe Behaviorally Handicapped. If SEL is taught to all students at a young age, and reinforced periodically throughout upper elementary, middle and high schools, I believe that it will have a positive impact on school climate and academic achievement.
