Last but not the least, since performance appraisals are linked to the bonus and salary increments, it acts as a major motivating or demotivating factor

It’s important to set periodic goals for oneself to see what you have learnt (classroom, peer to per, experiential) and how have you implemented those in your day to day work. If these outcomes could be quantified, it’s even better. Doing a knowledge sharing session among peers and getting feedback also helps you to understand if you have met your objectives of learning and have you applied them to the right use cases. Self assessment doing some online tools on that skill/ topic could also help you understand if you have made progress.

For IT Professionals, I think progress are easily measured with KPIs and metrics that contributes directly to ones role efficiency Additionally monthly or quarterly reviews and feedback from supervisors , peers and clients are helpful to understanding one's progress and the effect of their impact.
