How can a manager improve team decision-making skills?

To enhance team decision-making skills, a crucial initial step is clarifying the roles and expectations of each team member, along with defining the decision-making process and criteria. This proactive measure prevents confusion, conflicts, and redundant efforts, fostering a shared understanding of responsibilities and contributions. Utilizing tools like RACI matrices, decision trees, or flowcharts proves effective in clearly outlining and communicating these essential aspects of team collaboration.

Diversity and inclusion in the business-world is often misread as visual diversity. We look at someone and decide because they LOOK different, they must THINK differently. If business leaders truly want to improve decision making skills, they have to allow for cognitive diversity....from the mild to the wild. A mild example - have people sitting in the same room draw the same statue. Their vantage point, artistic ability, and personal perspective will all impact that drawing. Now take three individuals with different ways of thinking (analytical, artistic, abstract) and repeat the exercise. My favorite metaphor about this topic is how hammers only see nails. This tip is one of my personal favorites, based on my experience. From an employee's first day, it is important to make it okay to ask for things they need to achieve their ultimate goal, even if it is outside of your specific office or organization. Examples can include exposure to projects they might not otherwise be able to contribute to, thinking out of the box on training opportunities, and more. In my experience, this attitude and practice shows authenticity to your staff and also tends to lengthen their tenure, not shorten it.
