An important aspect while measuring the AI readiness for the client is "Data Exhaust Assessment", i.e. evaluating the quality as well as quantity of the data dump available. If the AI tool implementation is aimed at solving an intra organizational problem, then a good amount of quality intra-organizational data should be available, without which AI implementation would be almost impossible.

In evaluating a client's readiness for AI, focus on their unique ecosystem. For example, in retail, AI can personalize customer experiences by analyzing shopping patterns. It's about blending AI seamlessly with their existing strengths and addressing specific needs.

The key is aligning AI with their core mission - in this case, improving health outcomes - while navigating ethical considerations, like data privacy and AI bias.

An often neglected aspect while designing a strategy for cutting-edge tech like AI is setting the right goals and KPIs for AI solutions as well as alignment on 'best case', 'most likely case', and worst case values for these metrics'. This is because clients often think AI would be a genie that would solve almost every aspect of their business problem. Which is often not the case. Hence alignment on KPIs and realistic expected values for those KPIs is crucial. For example, some Accuracy and Performance Metrics For AI models could include accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, or other relevant metrics based on the nature of the AI solution.

In my experience, implementing AI solutions is a delicate balance of technical prowess and stakeholder management. For a retail client, managing an AI project for inventory optimization involved not just algorithmic fine-tuning but also ensuring seamless team collaboration. Regular updates and adaptive strategies were key, especially when aligning the technical team's capabilities with the business's dynamic needs. Monitoring performance metrics was crucial to iteratively refine the solution for maximum impact.

Implementing successful AI solutions requires comprehensive project management, effective collaboration between teams, and constant monitoring to make adjustments and improvements as performance and feedback evolve.

Jump straight to AI solutions. I have had leaders at all levels invite AI (Bard, ChatGPT...) into their conversations. When a question comes up, pose it to a few Generative AI agents as councilors then discuss, compare, contrast, and explore both responses and their usefulness. Leaders who have applied this practice learned about "AI hallucinations" and factual errors. Encourage them to explore how the AI agent may have gotten its response off base or just wrong. They have also gotten insights from validated responses and invalidated responses as well. Facilitate discussions and have those leaders provide advice to their peers and superiors.

For a manufacturing client, this meant not just training staff in AI tools, but also reshaping their approach to problem-solving. The training should cover - what is AI, how it can be used in our industry and our company, legal and ethical implications of using AI, and limitations of AI. 2 big points - a) companies must avoid AIWashing! b) if using, a licensed version must be used. Final recommendation - as with any other new thing - think before you leap or walk before you run!

An important thing to remember as a consultant is that the goal is not to 'implement AI' for the client but to solve an existing business problem or get a headstart on a potential business opportunity with the help of AI. Hence while implementing any AI-based technology for a client it's always a good idea to never lose sight of the business Problem or Opportunity that you're targetting and not just implement AI for the sake of it.

In a real case, we encountered a manufacturing client expressing hesitancy about AI adoption due to workforce concerns. Comprehending the problem, we directed our focus towards the human-centric aspect. In our approach, we emphasized AI's potential to augment jobs rather than replace them as evidence shows from other firms in the industry where AI enhanced productivity and also created new, fulfilling roles. When presenting the solution, we formulated a phased AI implementation plan: Initially, prioritized employee training programs, ensuring they are empowered and well-prepared. Subsequent phases involved a gradual integration of AI, facilitating the team's seamless adaptation. The result surpassed expectations with a smooth transition!

One way is to get your feet wet with AI via that long hanging fruit within your org. From my discussions with various execs and CEOs, a common low hanging fruit would be HR. Use that experience to fan it out your org from back to front. Of course, this assumes that your company has systematically managed data that an LLM / training model could be built on. AI, like any other tech, is just another layer of interface after all albeit a very sophisticated one that works off data.

Should deployment of an application be urgent, hire an industry-savvy and AI savvy guide / coach. There is no magic to design, development, and deployment of AI Tech. Data quality and relevance will be the biggest challenge. Pay particular attention to the relevance of available data to current and future business challenges.
