Designing scalability into the IT infrastructure requires looking at it from the business perspective, understanding potential additions (staffing, products or both), understanding applications and services required, security needed, and create a business plan that details the above to upper management. Upper Management will have to understand that scaling will cost additional dollars up front but save dollars in the long run; due to reduce staffing and less impact to the business due to less outages and minimal impact when scaling is needed.
