I agree that it is important to connect with audiences emotionally. Most will not believe a speech will impact them much beyond initial reactions. It can be done though. For those who don't believe, I share the story of when I was a Client satisfaction manager. In that role, I knew the importance of recognition. I convinced management to celebrate the birthday of a long time customer service employee doing the grunt work. They listened and bought a cake and we all surprised him singing happy birthday. He was left in tears. Never seen someone cry like that at work before. This company action had no doubt deeply touched this employee and probably earned some more loyalty as a result. All for the cost of a cake.
