I use a tool called "Chess Player/Chess Piece" in these circumstances. A chess piece is moved around the board. When you act as a piece, you can't see the playing field, you can't take it all in. The perspective is limited. This is the POV most people have. Now, shift to the perspective of a chess player. See how the person you are working with fits into the whole. See how they tend to move and what their motivations are. Get to know their goals and what they care about. Now you are in the player's perspective. You aren't just a pawn. You can help the pieces cooperate and work together for a shared goal. Some coaches call this the "watcher" or "witness" perspective. The separation creates operational space for you.

Choose evidence/examples from the same industry. Create a mock framework or test your proposal and present evidence when applicable. Use data, numbers, metrics and present benefits like cost savings, etc. Always use some kind of metrics when presenting evidence wherever applicable. Present it in a very organized way. Finally, during this process of gathering evidence, one can also understand if and why their suggestions may or may not work. Bringing out clarity within us, even before presenting the case to your boss, there by instilling more confidence.

In my experience coaching leaders and teams it is important to keep top of mind that our experiences are different in terms of how we have developed our behaviors and habits so be curious together. Explore without judgment what might be obstacles when going through change as well as their relationship to it. Offer your assistance in building specific action steps that will support the leader as well as the overall team by offering your time, thoughts, and assistance when implementing change. A team needs to be supportive of each other especially in our rapidly evolving workplace. New behaviors and habits take time to implement so provide support instead of causing additional friction.
