Here's how you can effectively request feedback from recruiters.

Timing is Key Right After Rejection: Request feedback soon after you receive the rejection. Recruiters are more likely to remember the details of your application and interview. Avoid Busy Times: Try to avoid reaching out during their busiest times, like Mondays or Fridays.

I always appreciate people that reach out after they have interviewed that want to learn from the experience, and request any feedback from the interview team that I am able to get for them. If you tell me you want to know what concerns the company had regarding your interview, I will tell you both the good and bad feedback, and suggest ways to improve the next time. Don't get defensive, but let me know if you may have been misunderstood so I can follow up with my client to resolve the misunderstanding.

Be Polite and Professional Subject Line: Use a clear and polite subject line, e.g., “Request for Feedback on My Interview for [Job Title].” Email Body: Keep it brief and respectful. Thank them for the opportunity and their time.

Specificity Helps Be Specific: Mention the job title and the date of the interview. Focus on Improvement: Express that your goal is to understand how you can improve for future opportunities.

I always try to follow up with people that I have submitted for a position to give them feedback. I don't mind at all if you contact me if you haven't heard back from me in a couple of days, since I might be having difficulty connecting the the hiring manager. A second email or call requesting any insights from the interview is also fair, and shows your desire to improve your interviewing skills for the next time. If you haven't had a response after 2 attempts, you may want to consider if that is a recruiter you want to work with.

Realize that the feedback you get from your recruiter isn't THEIR thoughts on how you did, but the comments from the interview team. If you receive negative feedback, realize there may be room for improvement, and ask your recruiter for any suggestions on where you can improve. Being accepting of feedback and showing willingness to improve will make me want to work with you again, and to present you for future job openings.

If you do receive feedback, demonstrate growth in public. For example, you might be told your projects are too simple. 1. Create a more complex project with new technologies 2. As you build, post your progress as blog articles, demo videos, or LinkedIn content 3. Return to the hiring manager with evidence of your growth and thank them for the feedback You may not get a 2nd chance to interview, but you'll leave a good impression and potentially earn yourself a referral down the road.
