I have worked in teams that are Diverse and seen teams that are Homogenous. What's the difference? I would suggest 4 key factors 1- Diverse teams do not embody groupthink 2- Diverse teams offer diversity of thought - leading to innovation and creativity 3- Diverse teams reflect our customers and the communities they serve 4- Diverse Senior leadership teams set the tone for organisations and increases brand reputation which attracts more customers and better talent

In our experience of working with organisations who are defining an EDI strategy, it is crucial that the senior leadership team defines a clear Vision. The vision acts like a 'North Star' The vision helps everyone work towards the same objective even though they have diversity of thought. The vision provides a future focus in terms of where they want to be. A well-crafted vision statement needs to celebrate and embrace the value of diversity. Building and defining the vision needs to be a collaborative process because when diverse team members are involved they feel a sense of ownership and investment.

When conveying my vision, I use stories and analogies that resonate with the team. This not only makes the message more accessible but also helps build an emotional connection to the vision, making everyone feel like an integral part of the process.

In my experience having clear communication when presenting the vision is about building trust and demonstrating transparency within the team. Diverse teams have different approaches to problem-solving therefore clarity becomes vital. Clear communication is also key becomes it helps everyone to stay on the same page as business evolves.

When delivering training, building inclusion into everyday operations is crucial -Although there are many things you could do I would suggest the following 3 principles 1- Create Psychological Safety, there needs to be a feeling of trust and security so that the diverse teams members feel safe to share ideas, take risks and offer feedback. 2- Active listening and appreciate differences - true inclusion is about valuing the unique perspectives that your diverse team members bring, so create opportunities for people to talk openly and create healthy debate 3- Equitable opportunities - on an inclusive team, everyone has to have a fair shot at success, this means giving equal access to resources and development opportunities

When building Inclusion for diverse teams one very important factor really matters and we have found that the companies that sustain this truly tap into the power of inclusion. That is accountability. Its crucial for leaders to be visible champions of inclusion, hold themselves accountable for creating a fair environment and address any issues that arise.
