When I start managing new teams, one of my first concerns is to get to know each member of the team personally and how the team functions when they are working together. This way I can identify different types of leaders, talented people who specialise in certain tasks and even those who may need help to develop their potential. For the latter, I discreetly assign them tasks with more responsibility, such as leading the team by setting targets, dates and presenting the work to their bosses. This way I can not only see if they have met the demands, but also if they have hidden potential to go further professionally.
