Here's how you can choose sustainable design materials and technologies as a project manager.

Include multiple stakeholders for your design and consider the full life cycle of the product. Sustainable design goes beyond designing a product for its usage phase but determines which design decisions could affect other life cycle phases and other stakeholders. Include in your analysis, for example, the waste managers or the service/maintenance suppliers, so they can provide inputs to the features required in a design for making it easy to disassemble, repair and sort materials at the end of life.

La sostenibilidad, aunque puede tener criterios "universales", se tienen que priorizar, obviamente, tomando en cuenta los criterios que el cliente quiere implantarle en función a sus necesidades y el partido arquitectónico, es decir a cómo se distribuye la función en el espacio y que imagen quiere dar y las metas en sostenibilidad que quiere lograr.

Sustainable design goes beyond materials and technology selection. Some other strategies like design for modularity, design for disassembly and design for upgradeability just to mention a few, are not necessarily dependant of materials and technologies, but require deep knowledge and planning to ensure that the design complexity and the cost are reduced and not increased. Consider the different mechanical, chemical or thermal loads that the product or its materials will be subjected to during the entire lifecycle since those could highly influence the lifespan and a material that looked like a good option, might end up having the opposite effect due to durability reduction under the mentioned loads.

No todos los proyectos pueden tener la misma atención en todos los aspectos; por ejemplo: si se diseña un edificio de oficinas, y el requerimiento del cliente es la gran densificación del predio, no será posible prever una excelente iluminación natural a todas las áreas, lo mismo que con la ventilación netamente natural debido a la gran profundidad de los espacios, pero si se puede evaluar los materiales de la envolvente para disminuir la carga térmica o la pérdida de calor y al mismo tiempo, procurar la máxima eficiencia del equipamiento.

If you have a startup or a small company with very few resources, you can conduct a qualitative sustainability assessment or a sustainability failure mode and effect analysis with a life cycle thinking, using the help of experts who know the environmental or social effects of a material or a process, and then you can assign controls to those hotspots you identified during the process. LCA is a powerful tool, but it requires a lot of time and resources and should not be substituted by the previous unless there is in reality no resources to conduct a comprehensive analysis, but making a qualitative assessment is always better than doing nothing.

El análisis del ciclo de vida, es una herramienta altamente objetiva y cuantitativa que puede mostrarnos el impacto desde el diseño hasta la disposición final del edificio, y por tanto la elección de los materiales tanto de la envolvente como de la estructura, en la medida que no es lo mismo la disposición final de un edificio de concreto que uno de acero, pero claro, siempre viendo el contexto del proyecto; incluso hay países y contextos en los cuales la estructura de madera es una excelente opción, claro, previendo adecuadamente el mantenimiento del mismo.

As stated previously, engagement of stakeholders should occur in the early stages of the concept, when the product features are evaluated. Use morphological matrix and multicriteria analysis to select those features that can cover most stakeholders' needs by developing just one or a few.

En las iniciales, se proponen los criterios, no obstante a medida que avanza es más difícil retomar decisiones previas porque implican retrasos. Lo mejor es medir todas las veces que sea posible, y en los casos de objetivos que son menos "medibles" pues evaluar si el cliente quiere asumirlos. Hay indicadores en iluminación y ventilación natural, sujetos a la profundidad y altura de los ambientes, por tanto, esos se pueden casi "adivinar" en función al planteamiento desde el inicio, pero hay otros que dependen de la cantidad de elementos, por tanto no siempre es posible asistir a todos los componentes de la "paleta" del confort y la sostenibilidad de la misma manera.
