Once high-level company goals have been set, in the past I have run workshops with my team to: 1) Review the goals and put them into context for my team 2) Brainstorm key themes within our team that are related to the company goals and then collaborate on prioritizing those themes 3) Workshopped team OKRs (objectives and key results) that ladder up to the bigger goals 4) Separately, set individual OKRs that then ladder up to the team goals Setting OKRs that roll up to the company goals helps team members feel included in the bigger picture (ex. during All Hands meetings) and helps them prioritize activities that drive the company forward.

Corporate mobility can create leadership inertia, requiring sustained effort to adapt to new challenges. I recall starting a new leadership role and being advised by my manager to maintain the status quo: “Mamadou, we are doing fantastic! Let’s stay put and don’t change anything!” While it may seem logical to let well alone, staying put in an evolving ecosystem negatively impacts the company’s bottom line more than suppressing innovation. According to Newton’s first law of motion, an object remains in its state unless acted upon by a force. Similarly, innovating and transforming industries requires challenging the status quo! Don't stand still! Let's keep moving!
