Important things to check- Market coverage offered by vendors, their financial health, previous work experience and references must be checked, whether they have been involved in any legal cases or not and what was the outcome. There health and safety policies and practices needs to be checked. Also, would be good to check there three year focus plan and strategy.

You basically have two vendor strategies (with variations): 1️⃣ bid to lowest cost with no loyalty whatsoever 2️⃣ nurture relationships The 2nd one is more complicated. You have to do more research, etc. You might start with #1 then graduate to #2 after trying several. Whatever you do, remember, after a round of funding (or a budget outlay if you're an internal startup), money might seem abundant. It's NEVER abundant for a startup. So, don't do large commitments based on faith. Buy what you need only until you establish a record of predictability. Remember, predictability is not growth. If you grow below **OR ABOVE** expectation, then your business is not predictable and you should still be conservative with your vendors.

Your vendors can be your biggest assets when you listen to their suggestions and make the best choice as they will bring market knowledge on the table.

Being a start-up founder, I would like to be effective on my communications skills with the vendors, what I needed from them and what I could pay. what they have to offer me along with the services is secure processes. Then explore ways to add value more broadly beyond the client-vendor dynamic - whether through introductions to potential new customers, co-marketing partnerships, or even co-development projects that leverage each other's strengths. This two-way exchange cultivates loyalty over simple dollar-for-services trades. Vendors go above and beyond for true partners invested in their success. It becomes less transactional and more transformational.

Don't be a twat. Vendors make mistakes, they're only human. So, don't punish them. Remeber that the measure of customer service is what they do when it goes wrong. Also, give when you can, and ask for more when you NEED to. Remember, without vendors you have no customers.

Scale the vendor strategy with anticipated growth. Start-ups have little sway in the market, and even more limited balance sheet so are at the mercy of the vendor pool. Whilst unlikely to get a great deal from the larger vendors, have access to a wider pool of smaller vendors able to cope with smaller volumes. As the business grows however, the smaller, initially more attractive vendors may not be able to scale. And... larger, previously uninterested vendors may now be more attractive partners. Summary: Plan for growth and scale the vendor strategy accordingly do not "shoot for the stars" nor lock yourself into relationships that may hold you back.

These services combined often make up a large percentage of the overall cost of doing business and they are often left unreviewed.
