When working with external vendors, it's important to build trust and rapport for the relationship to flourish. It's vital to get establish essential agreements that all parties need to commit to. Also, it's important to understand what's important to your vendors in every interaction with them, which is great for building empathy. Every group would have its agenda in any partnership, and it's helpful if you acknowledge that and set expectations in terms of how everyone can help others in the collaboration.

From my experience leading with external vendors, the relationship should be a win win in spite of any power imbalance. What has worked for me in the past is making the vendor, no matter how big or small role they play in the relationship, feel like they are essential to the overall success of the relationship. Its about human relationships and in every relationships, the parts needs to feel valuable and appreciated. Recognizing their contribution to the success of the mutual project is also key in fostering collaboration and a successful relationship.
