You’re about to meet your new boss. How can you make a great first impression?

Ask them what THEIR pain points are, either in this role or, if they are new to it, with the transition. And show you are a team player, don’t disparage co-workers, that is never a good look.

Another great way to connect and build authentic credibility and trust is to find out if you have any common mutual connections. People tend to have a familiarity bias so if there’s a person whom you both know or have worked with in the past, it can help forge a relationship from the get-go.

I found that doing your research on someone like your new boss can also help you keep a conversation with. Asking questions about past jobs or achievements show you care.

Google the person you are going to meet. review their LinkedIn profile. Who knows, you may have worked for the same employer in the past or attended the same school. Instantly the conversation goes form warm to hot. Before you enter the meeting connect with your bosses peers on LinkedIn to find out their hobbies or interests. Above all enter the meeting in the correct attire, good poise, a smile and a firm handshake, not the limpy fish handshake!

Ensure you understand the dress code, and if you have questions, contact your HR team. If you want ideas about what to wear, please do some research online. There are great examples online. Dress professionally but comfortably. Attire plays a significant role in our confidence levels. Based on data, it is estimated that it takes about 7 seconds to make a first impression, so please make sure you make a good one. Ensure to greet them and introduce yourself if you haven't met them during the interview. If you have met, make sure to say that it is good to see them again.

Punctuality has always been my weakness. So, I needed to be extra careful during these meetings and ensure I was giving an excellent first impression. It took me a long time to learn to be better at showing up on time. If you're like me, plan your day in detail. Aim to arrive at the interview 15 minutes early.
