You're a consultant in the R&D industry. What do you do when you face unexpected challenges?

Develop a Plan or what I call is a play book! Pull all potential stakeholders and experts together and define all potential challenges. Document tasks with as much detail as possible to address the challenges. For each task define the value expected and include parameters to be measured, time involved, and resources required to complete the task. Do this with a database allowing information management to quickly evolve a first pass to an approved Plan. Expand the database to collect data as the Plan starts to be executed, this will logically steer activity correctly toward solutions! I have designed a database app to effectively accomplish a like challenge. Anyone interested?

What is the scope of an R&D project? This is always a tricky question! Having consultancy role within R&D might even mean that you shall help at the Project Initiation Phase to define the scope together with defining the possible and preapproved changes on the scope. Do not forget that usually we are shooting for creating something new, sometimes using new technologies, methodologies. Trial and error, continuous learning curve. Sometimes it is very hard to exactly define the scope under such conditions.

Very important. I have seen no any successful R&D activity without preparing, accepting and managing changes within the project. Successful adoption however does not mean necessarily meeting the project scope, however it would help a lot. Your job as a consultant is also concerned by the changes of the project, so your meaningful and valuable contribution to the project requires you to excel such skills as agility, change management, feedback methodologies, teamwork.

Embrace the Unknown: I take a deep breath, acknowledging the unexpected challenge disrupts the plan. But, I see it as an opportunity to explore uncharted territory and potentially uncover new solutions. Rapid Replan: I convene my team for a brainstorm. We leverage diverse perspectives to break down the challenge, identify its root cause, and rapidly craft fresh approaches to overcome it. Experimentation Loop: We develop a series of "mini-experiments" to test the new approaches. This allows for quick learning, adaptation, and course correction as we navigate the unexpected.

No chance for success without successful communication and collaboration! R&D work usually takes whole different teams, with different knowledge, perspectives, opinions and working environment. Different roles and responsibility should be aligned and made work together in a highly effective way to ensure that all the available resources are working towards the defined goals in a structured way. Without excellent collaboration, your R&D project is gone for sure.

The most precocious asset. Your time. It is also true for other team members' time and also for anyone who is stakeholder in the given R&D project. Time is the only resource you can not regenerate or use again, so be very wise how to plan, how to utilize and make value out of it. If you loose time control, you may have some backup using much more resources on the other edge of the table (human power, computing power, more raw materials, etc), but the lost time you will never get back.
