The discrepancy arises from a missing North Star vision. Both, approaches have their merits and shortcomings. The North Star approach helps establish the context that both your client and team gather around a "shared framework" of vision, mission, values, etc. Enumerating the North Star vision in a strategy charter will help validate strategy using both, subjective (intuition) and objective (data-driven) approaches. Without the context that the North Star vision provides, both approaches would be ineffective. Once the North Star vision is established, both your team and client can approach Strategy from their contexts, positions and approaches, thereby mutually reinforcing both approaches.
