I feel that this is often the thing that people miss/ rush through. I have seen it several times that people have things going on outside work that impact their professional life. It may of course be what's happening inside work - perhaps they feel unsupported or unappreciated, so are less engaged and more rigid in their approach to what they do. As has been stated, empathy, curiosity and active listening are key to understand what is going on for that person personally and professional to gain their perspective.

This is a CLASSIC situation in most teams that happens often, it is due to either of two extreme behaviors: - TOO CONFIDENT - TOO AFRAID When your team member is TOO CONFIDENT, that they know what's BEST and others are just beating around the bush and beneath this arises. You as a Tech Lead / Manager can defuse this by demonstrating the VALUES of other co-workers VISIBLY in any meeting / discussion. When your team member is TOO AFRAID, that they are NOT GOOD ENOUGH to be a part of it. You as a Tech Lead / Manager can defuse this by creating a psychologically SAFE environment for your team member to allow them fail fast and move forward.

The root cause of this is lack of mentorship / training, your team member may have come from a TOXIC workplace or brought up with BAD influence on how to approach CORPORATE CULTURE. As a responsible Tech Lead / Manager, it is your job to accept these facts and sit with them, COACH / MENTOR them to transform their PERSPECTIVE of CULTURE.

Instead of focusing on what’s missing, highlight and celebrate the small successes and improvements they make. Recognize their efforts publicly and provide constructive feedback as a part of their achievements. By reinforcing positive behaviors and showing appreciation for their contributions, you create a motivating environment where feedback is welcomed as a means of growth rather than criticism, ultimately enhancing collaboration and team cohesion.

Sometimes, the team member's intent is to be a BAD ACTOR and bring down everyone else along with him. It is then, you should set CLEAR boundaries stating the IMPACT, BEHAVIOR, OUTCOME leading to CONSEQUENCES.
