Your team has been underperforming for weeks. How can you get them back on track?

Identification of the root cause or source of any issues is an indispensable part of its resolution. These can be employee centric or technical or otherwise. Getting to the bottom of it is the first step to getting things back on track. We can do this by asking for feedback from the team members, having trackers in place to monitor the responses. Listening is a good habit to develop for anyone and as a team manager I have to hear each of my team members and understand their concerns to correctly ascertain the reason behind the underperformance.

Setting goals and objectives forms an important part of deciding how the team is expected to perform and where we want to reach as a team in terms of growth. Having conversations with the team can help in effective goal setting by taking into account their views and aspirations. We also need to make sure that the goals set are measurable and achievable. Setting unrealistic expectations will have an adverse impact hence it is imperative to know what can be attained so that there is no shortfall. Once these are set we have monitor the progress and celebrate the achievements which in turn will keep the team motivated and help them perform at par or even beyond expectations.

The next step is to monitor the progress and provide the team with constructive feedback or recognition. Feedback is essential to help the resources identify gaps and take necessary actions whereas recognition helps them feel motivated. Both of these are required and should be used in tandem to achieve desired results. They need to be specific and in time. Feedback can be used to help the members realise their potential and identify the additional skills required to rectify errors. Recognition is imperative and helps the team feel good about their work.

A team is all about collaboration and coordination. There are multiple members in a team, each with a different skill set and knowledge and bringing together these on the team table is what ensures success of the team and their individual members. If we talk about underperformance itself, one of the members might not have been able to perform at par but another member can pull them up and fill in for the gap. Issues can be better resolved by getting ideas from everyone and choosing the best alternative or by a combination of multiple ideas. These can be best achieved by clearly defining roles, having regular brainstorming sessions, having team building activities, etc. Collaborative approach in a team is central to its overall growth.

Issues are a part and parcel of life. They are bound to arise when working in a competitive environment and need to be addressed as soon as possible to neutralise the damage as much as possible. The first step would be to identify the problem and assess it's potential impact. We should then get feedback from the team and build possible solutions to resolve the issue. Issues and conflicts can, not only impact work but also the morale of the team and hence bringing about a synergy of thoughts to address these are important. As a team manager my role is also to absorb maximum impact myself so that not a lot gets transpired to the team. Hence it is important to resolve the problems right at the start to prevent any possible damage.
