The internet can see right through the BS. So I would suggest you start with an authentic voice. Share your thoughts, insights, and experiences in a way that reflects who you are, while still aligning with your professional image. Avoid overly formal language that doesn’t feel true to you, but also steer clear of overly casual or inappropriate slang. Think of it like having a conversation with a colleague—be genuine, approachable, and clear. Your audience will appreciate the real you and will be more likely to engage with your content.

Building a personal brand is so important! Getting your visuals right is key! Start with finding your colour scheme and make sure it's consistent across all your profiles.

Take your time and do your research so many people rush into getting some brand photos yet have no real understanding of your brand. What are your values? What’s your vision for the future of your work? Who do you work with? Understanding who your ideal client is, is essential as then you can tailor your brand, your messaging and visuals to always attract the right person. If your visuals (graphics, photos, colours) aren’t consistent and good high quality and you’re looking for clients to invest big with you, your brand could be turning them away. Are you a luxury brand selling high ticket offers yet your branding looks cheap then something needs to change.

There are higher levels of your personal brand than you can imagine. So many people think putting picture of themselves up on social media and saying what they do is creating their bio. I sit with personal branding clients all the time and walk them through their profile and you can see the lightbulb go off when they realize how the details of their profile are working for them or against them. Most of my client have never even thought about the function of their profile picture or the expression on their face. They have never thought what people will think of them and how they would rank various things like intelligence, skills, friendliness, and professionalism just from looking at their picture. Visuals matter.

Strike a balance between personal and professional content. Share insights and updates related to your field, but don’t be afraid to sprinkle in personal anecdotes, hobbies, or behind-the-scenes glimpses of your life. This balance helps humanize you and makes your content more relatable without compromising your professional integrity. For example, you could post about a recent project you completed and also share a picture from your weekend hike. This mix keeps your audience engaged and interested in both your professional expertise and personal journey.

I typically just stick to work posts on my LinkedIn but sometimes will add some personal things from networking events I do, like different balls I go to with historic associations. I've found that people within my network find these interesting and it is kind of a nice change of pace from my typical content.

Be open to sharing content is a way that speaks to yourself and audience, while still being professional. It's about insight and learnings, let the world see who you are.

An important point to remembering about engaging is making sure when you post goes out you are there to engage in real time. Respond to all comments even if you disagree with them - ask a follow up question encouraging the person to share more of their thoughts on that topic. Do check how your response reads - does it sound rude/flippant/annoyed? This is something you want to avoid and although when we speak sarcasm is easy to spot it isn't as clear on social media - especially if you don't know the person.

Respond Promptly: Engage with comments and messages on time. Meaningful Interactions: Offer thoughtful responses and engage in meaningful conversations. Acknowledge Feedback: Show appreciation for positive feedback and handle criticism gracefully.

The best way to create a personal brand is by starting conversations! The biggest boost you can get is by being yourself on the comments and threads of larger conversations. A lot of growing your network is building relationships which doesn’t come from one-sided posts. Posting is great for awareness and sharing insights but commenting on posts or replying to comments, and replying to DMs will help build those relationships (and your network) in a positive manner.

Engage with your audience thoughtfully and respectfully. Respond to comments, questions, and messages promptly and professionally. Show appreciation for your audience’s interaction, which fosters a positive community around your brand.

Sometimes engaging daily can be a bit of a challenge so I like to then pick and choose who to interact with/who I should interact with. I'll rotate through platforms and decide which I want to engage on more in that moment.

Consistency also applies to your tone and style—make sure your personality shines through in every post, whether it’s a text update, a photo, or a video. This consistent presence reinforces your personal brand and makes it easier for your audience to connect with you. Plan your content ahead of time to ensure you’re posting regularly and maintaining a consistent voice across all platforms.

The reason consistency counts is because people are inconsistent. When others fail you enter a space with little to no competition. People are good at starting but not good at staying. Try two things to see the truth in what I am saying. 1 - Post something every day for 30 days. 2 - Comment and engage with 5 posts a day for 30 days. Look at your results, analytics, and engagement after just 30 days and you will realize that results are easy when you are doing the right things and if you are waiting for results but not doing the right things it SEEMS hard when it really isn't.

Create a content plan and show up consistently for your followers! Remember your audience follows you because they resonate with you and want to hear more of what you have to say. Post a mixture of static posts, videos and story posts to keep your followers interested and engaged.

Even if you only post one work-related update per week, being consistent with those updates enables your audience to become accustomed to your cadence and eager to read the next installment in your professional story. Consistency is what helps you stand out from the hundreds of other social media users who give up because they don't go viral immediately. It also enables you to develop a loyal following who recommend you when relevant opportunities arise.

In my experience the best way to have a growth mindset is to surround yourself in networks and communities who are also looking to grow and growing. This helps to inspire you for your own personal growth. Take time to share your posts and always be open to learning and developing your ideas, offers etc through listening to your audience. Quite often they are giving you the clues and answers to what they want and need. For example if you put a new offer out it’s easy to jump to why people aren’t buying time or money usually being the two big ones when actually it might be that your offer is great but the messaging isn’t landing. Speak to your audience and get their feedback. This is essential for growth.

Share your learning experiences and professional development journey. Talk about challenges you’ve faced and how you’ve overcome them. This mindset of continuous improvement is relatable and inspiring to your audience.

Consider the platform you’re using and tailor your content accordingly. LinkedIn might be better suited for more professional updates, while Instagram can handle more personal, visual content. Be mindful of the privacy settings and the audience you’re sharing with. Always stay true to your values and avoid sharing content that could be misinterpreted or harm your professional reputation. Lastly, monitor the impact of your posts through analytics to understand what resonates with your audience and adjust your strategy accordingly.
