In my team.... we have have a monthly plan of action based on the actual competition and market situation. We have this monthly program which we call Ideas Plus! Everyone is free to discuss their own ideas and innovations based on what's happening in the market. One of the easiest and most useful process that I found, for encouraging innovation, is presented by Renée Mauborgne and W. Chan Kim, in Blue Ocean Strategy. Basically, the whole idea of this approach is to avoid going head to head against your competitors, but looking for ways of expanding the market, buy creating new markets, untapped by your competitors. This can be achieved just by innovating. Is it hard, but once you manage to do it, you will have an entire market to flourish in, and even if the completions will arrive, you will still have the first in the category advantage.
