You can also provide feedback and guidance on how to interpret and apply the results of these assessments.

Students should compare their skills with the work dynamics of their field of interest if it requires fixed/flexible working hours, creativity/ discipline, or else. Educational and career counseling would help students dig deep into their interests, aspirations, and expectations. Introducing students to different fields they might need to be aware of is essential. Due to their young age, sometimes students follow someone else’s steps (a parent or a mentor) without acknowledging alternative fields.

Exploring academic majors and career path is an analytical activity. The students should first start by checking on a career path that will have relevance in the next 30-40 years from the date of their path selection process. (Note: Relevance in the sense that a particular career will always have an industry demand and has sleek chances of being replaced by AI. Even if replaced with AI, the adaptability to convert yourself to become the instruction giver or user of AI should be there). Once a career path is decided, then Academic Major selection becomes easy as one just needs to align the academic requirement with the career path selected!!

At the pre-university level, many students may be unsure of their education and career preferences, or even their goals in life. Exposing them to different fields of study and work through the curriculum and also extra-curriculars such as talks, education/career fairs, etc., help to give students a starting point and a good push for them to start researching their own pathways. In Singapore, our Education and Career Guidance curriculum, which all our educators are trained to teach, alongside the standard curriculum, gives schools the liberty to provide resources for students such as learning journeys to different industry HQs and even application-to-industry-based lessons and tutorials.

I think finding out where natural abilities are is important because usually, if you are good at something, you enjoy it. If you enjoy something, you are probably good at it. I think practical experience is also important so being in an environment where students can see things up close and how they work can influence the decision to follow a career path.

In my experience, it’s necessary to engage students in identifying where their special interests and skills align. You can further advise them to learn more about it, while exploring other opportunities. Engage them further for feedback, so you can re-align their views and give the best possible option. Usually, I let them know that one should not be limited by their chosen career path, it’s okay to diversify as you grow if your interest do change along the way. Additionally, opportunities may come in diverse ways, and might need a modification in the career plan. After all, the path to a meaningful and fulfilling career often lies in uncertainties.

An inclusive way to support multiple intelligence learning is to empower pupils to reflect on their developmental niche and decide what careers to explore based on their beliefs/values. Montessori Practitioners are allowed to review rubric self assessments, observations, and consensus data points relevant to academic performance. Reading age learners may analyze their own interpersonal actions, learned outcomes, personal preferences, and offer rich descriptions through metacognition. The role of a Montessori guide is to allow others to balance both positive and negative consequences of each option. However, a Montessorian encourages the developmental niche as the anchor irregardless of societal norms or the macrosystem.

What has helped me to reflect has been to do a 'Orientation Year' after high school, specifically for students who didn't know what they would like to go do or study. It consisted of different types of classes, from cognitive/academic, to art classes. All this to help you figure out what you enjoy, what motivates you, what you'd find important. For example, in the arts classes you wouldn't necessarily learn how to create an outstanding paint work, but you'd learn from the process of doing the work, eg about your own perfectionism. Art was used as a way to learn about yourself. Having the luxury (and privilege!) of a year to focus on self-discovery has been highly valuable to me in figuring out what I wanted, and it might be to others too.

You can check in with them regularly and ask them how they are doing, feeling, or thinking about their majors and careers. All of the above listed points. However I would rather hone in on their natural talents and throw in some exercises to help them access the other side of their brain to challenge them further. For example, travel to different countries to see life, learning to play an instrument. Introduce Lego. Read shakespeare. Do some cleaning up at home. Wash a car. Suggest meeting and spending time with professionals they admire and also introduce them to the different intelligences that a human being possess not to forget, always add humour. This will surely open their minds.
