What are some successful strategies for building a cross-functional team?

Proper scoping of the project will give rise to the ability of a team leader to assemble the right levels of contribution-- both in terms of hard and soft skills. Pressures from outside to bring onto the team the wrong resources may prove hard to resist, but the wrong resources can prove fatal to reaching the goal or reaching the goal on time-- these pressures should be resisted gently but firmly. When the right hard skill exists but is packaged with the absence of the right soft skills, other team members need to be advised of the skill gap and to exercise patience and understanding to accommodate without folding. The right soft skills packaged with the wrong hard skills must not be added to the team.

In my experience this step is the most important. Ensuring everyone involved understands the expected outcome and the „why“ is time we’ll spent. If not you should let them challenge it - to hear their position, make changes where needed, build trust, buy-in, team spirit. The scope, timeline etc. will get challenged as time passes. If step 1 is well defined, you can keep coming back to it for clarity.

Be sure the team members you choose have sufficient capacity to prioritize the project. It's better to have a committed second choice than a first-choice who can't be reached or prioritize their commitments.

You don’t always get to chose the team members, so you may need to „work with what you’ve got“. Make sure each member knows why their on the team, what their special skill is that got them nominated and what you expect from them. Ask what they see as their role/contribution to the goal and what challenges they may have (capacity, other priorities etc)

Could provide opportunities in the beginning to get to know each other, have regular calls while being mindful of reducing stress and tight timelines in the beginning to leave time for „chatter“, acknowledging small successes and celebrating these together etc. Continuously looking back at how far you’ve already come as a team and celebrating the mindset „divide and conquer“ to get to the end goal.

The key is for everyone in the Team to feel sufficiently informed, but not having to sit through meetings/calls that may not contain relevant information for them. I personally am a big fan of project planners/tools such as Microsoft teams. Everyone can contribute and retrieve information in their own time and space. However a regularly scheduled meeting is important to keep the team together. Fine line between individual flexibility and common path.
