What are some fun ways to incorporate whimsy into your fashion illustrations?

As an illustrator and designer who’s taught close to 8,000 students fashion illustrations, two points that I stress upon in every class are mentioned below: -Experiment and find your signature style. It could be the colour of the skin or the hairstyle. It could be an exaggerated eye or the elongated legs. Find your true signature style which people associate with you. -Try multiple mediums or create your own version of mixed mediums before you settle for a style.

Exploring unconventional color choices, such as vibrant oranges or neons, adds a refreshing twist to both formal and streetwear styles. While black is a common choice for streetwear, opting for unexpected colors like white can bring a unique edge. Similarly, for formal occasions, moving away from traditional neutral and earthy tones to embrace bold primary colors can make a striking statement.

Choose vibrant and unexpected colour combinations to bring whimsy to your fashion illustrations. Feel free to mix and match bold and contrasting colours, creating a lively and magical effect. Colours like bubblegum pink, lime green, and electric blue can add whimsy to your illustrations.

We should try adding more of colours, texture and 3d effects. And by adding lots of 3d effects on the illustrations to make them more whimsy minutes detailing and captions as in graphic will play a great role in that.

From my experience, often I want my illustrations to be as close as possible to the actual garment so I use the unrealistic color in other ways. Whether I use the contrast color as an outline to the character or add it in unexpected accessories color choices, I will only use this method when the illustration is not for a professional business attire. Only you know if it’s appropriate to add lightness to your illustrations so choose wisely when to add the unexpected colors and don’t be afraid. Even if it for professional illustrations.

I love a sense of movement when illustrating fashion. It's about expressing the dynamic emotion of the designer's concept. Its as much about the qualities of the piece as it as about making an accurate portrayal of the design. Fashion is an art form in itself - what is the designer trying to evoke in their work. This speaks to their use of colour and form as well as life itself.

Color changes the entire composition of a piece. Experiment with mixed palettes to create different moods. If you’re working digitally, use hue and saturation to alter color intensity.

Having the right pattern, structure, and symmetry helps enhance the calmness of the look despite some artistic busyness of the patterns. For example, a plain top can perfectly match a stripped or checked pants. Give it the bright whimsy life and fun. A touch of bright color!

I adore mixing patterns and textures, as long as it’s done in a way that creates harmony within every piece. Solids are always a good mix with the patterns, but can be a little boring. Personally, I would mix patterns and textures of similar scales and have fun with it!

Experimenting with shapes and proportions are critical elements of a well-executed style of fashion. Dress according to your beautiful size; how would you feel if as a 4’9” beautiful woman, you politely requested a custom made Chanel dress and all you got was an oversized coat with an unflattering long skirt? Unpleased! Therefore, let the clothes be well-proportioned. Top heavy, lite bottom. Lite top, bottom heavy!

Instead of portraying your model in a traditional standing position, experiment with dynamic and whimsical poses. Consider drawing your model dancing, jumping, or striking a fun and unexpected pose. This will add a lively and whimsical touch to your illustration.

Experimenting with shapes and proportions is very important for dressing to your body. I do think you can always add a fun cutout or play with a fun shape to your garment as long as you know your target market and it’s cohesive with multiple body types.

In my opinion illustration or even designing without humor and personality is like cocking with no spices. You get the final dish but it’s tasteless. When you design, try to design something try to yourself. Something that no one else can design just like you. That’s the personality in the illustration. It can indeed be manifested in the model poses but can also be in the colors, patterns and prints. Fashion should be fun but make you think at the same time. Think about that when you illustrate

Experimenting with collage by cutting pieces from magazines or incorporating real fabric not only adds texture but also elevates the visual impact of the artwork. It's a creative approach that enhances the depth and uniqueness of the illustration.

Mixed media is my favourite method to fun whimsy illustrations, by using unconventional and conventional materials, for example, add a paper texture to create 3D frills, volume, or shape. You can also use a combination of digital cutouts, fabric, or unconventional materials like plastic waste from water bottles.

I love using mixed media! Typically I’ll use digital and pencils, but I also love making good collage. Doing this creates an exciting environment to just be creative and have fun with the process.

Getting ideas for your fashion graphics from non-fashion-related sites are the most creative way to take inspiration for your design. It may even come from broken electric cable, dried flowers and leaves. It might have the greatest varieties found in the fashion sector.

Inspiration is all around us , it's how you get inspired by a subject and add an element of design and aesthetics which makes you different from others .

Absolutely, drawing inspiration from sources beyond fashion, such as nature's elements like leaves or water, can spark incredible creativity. Imagine crafting a dress design inspired by the intricate patterns of leaves or capturing the fluidity of water to create a beautifully flowing garment. This unconventional approach not only broadens your creative horizons but also results in unique and visually captivating designs.

Don't make it too perfect! Fashion feels like always being about perfection and beauty - leave something in that contrasts this such as sketch lines or maybe bold, rushed strokes in certain parts. Too much perfection can be boring!
