Your audience won't enjoy a hook or a cliffhanger if it doesn't lead to a powerful lesson. Make sure you know that before you use them. Don't put all your focus on the perfect hook or cliffhanger. Put the focus on writing a fantastic story where each area is as powerful as the last.

When using hooks and cliffhangers, avoid being too predictable or using them excessively. Ensure the payoff justifies the buildup, and remains authentic and relevant to the story. Avoid fabricating a hook solely for attention. Additionally, be mindful of pacing and timing to enhance the narrative.

One of my biggest pet peeves in storytelling is a hook that promises that "you'll want to stick around to find out more". A really simple example here is "what's in the box?" More times than not, I'm let down once I finally "get" to the reveal. The best storytellers I know do things a little differently. 1) They pose a question. 2) They reveal the "thing" early, which then 3) creates more questions in the mind of the audience. "Wait...how is the thing in the box going to do "x"?" So 2 things are happening. 1 - you're providing an immediate payoff and grabbing attention and 2 - you're building a curiosity loop now that you have earned permission to keep going from your audience. Now they care.

Texts, much like individuals, possess their own soul and personality, right? So, when we rely too much on the humor or expressions crafted by someone else, we risk losing the essence of what makes our storytelling special and unique. Erudition and clever lines may impress temporarily, but they lack the enduring impact that comes from true originality.

It is NOT necessary to use cliffhangers in the end of every chapter or episode. Using it in moderation is the key to gain trust of our readers/ viewers/ listeners. Overusing cliffhangers prepares the audience to expect one at the end of every episode. And that will eventually make them lose interest in the story. Audience expect the unexpected. And that's when they get thrilled. If the story becomes predictable with over usage of cliffhangers, their experience is ruined and they'll not consider consuming our new stories.
