What are the signs of team conflict?

During Team conflict, generally it starts from lack of trust and then results into Quiet Quitting. Employee slowly start disengaging from responsibilities, stop taking initiatives and stops collaborating in events and meetings. The lower engagement declines the overall team spirit and enthusiasm. we need to monitor continuously the engagement levels of employees, regular communication and offline conversations can build an open atmosphere helping employee to share their concerns. Creating niche ideas to handle those concerns can be highly helpful for the organisation to manage the employee engagement.

Some practices to keep a team engaged: Create open communication channels so employees can voice concerns, ask questions, and offer suggestions. Set Clear Expectations and set challenging but achievable goals and provide regular feedback on performance. Consistently recognize and reward good performance, whether through public praise, bonuses, promotions or other forms of recognition. Provide learning and development opportunities such as training, workshops and mentoring programs. Promote a culture that values collaboration and teamwork, where ideas are shared and respected. Highlight the importance of work-life balance and promote policies that allow employees to manage their lives outside of work.

There can be various reasons for low engagement within a team, and as a leader, it's crucial to strive to understand them. One of these reasons is the absence of an environment that welcomes diverse perspectives. Additionally, you should provide your team with the necessary resources to enhance engagement. By acknowledging their achievements and efforts and offering guidance for improvement, you can foster a culture of continuous learning and growth. Toxic environment, demoralised individuals, poor performance , high alteration rate and many more indications clearly demonstrates team conflicts. It's like a termite that eats away the strength of the team and of the company too. The frustrated team does leg pulling, shy away from responsibility, make frequent mistakes that derails the performance.

Low engagement or lack of cooperation is often a sign of conflicts because conflicts can lead to a breakdown in teamwork and collaboration. They may be less likely to share important information or resources with others, may resist working together on shared tasks or projects, actively work against each other's goals or efforts, which can disrupt cooperation, also lead to the creation of obstacles or barriers that hinder cooperation and progress. In short the lack of cooperation is a clear sign of conflicts because conflicts often result in strained relationships and a reluctance to work together harmoniously, ultimately impacting productivity and group cohesion.

Here are some specific examples of what to do to reduce turnover in organizations: Improve the Onboarding Process, offer professional development opportunities, promote a culture of recognition, conduct meaningful performance evaluations, guide the employee in strategic actions to improve "gaps" and reinforce the positive points, stimulating assertive feedback and feedforward, leaders in harmony that are duly prepared to lead the teams, promote diversity and inclusion, practicing the need and importance of plural environments.

As a Digital Marketing Team Lead, I've noticed signs of team conflict: communication breakdown, decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, low morale, cliques, personal attacks, decision-making difficulties, missed deadlines, high turnover, and emotional stress. Addressing these promptly and fostering open communication is crucial for a productive team.

Post COVID 19, the focus of many employees has shifted from high-paying jobs to job satisfaction. It is also rightly observed that it is the behavior of the Manager that makes or breaks a team. Experience tells that it is important to good Leaders as Managers who are responsible to nurture and build a motivated team who do not feel the need to leave given their belief in stability and Job satisfaction. The modern saying goes" Choose to work for a good manager than a good company". Selecting the right Manager is key to building a strong and content team and also reduces the risk of high turnaround.

There is a high turnover rate when conflicts have gotten out of control. Those who are retained are also distracted by this sign. My experience suggests that leaders should discuss with the affected team line managers in detail, to gather different perspectives on the conflict. Having understood the context, leaders must determine what went wrong and how to prevent it from happening again. Having timely catch ups or open hands meetings, either formally or informally, helps get an early indication of potential conflicts. It allows leaders to take control of the situation before high turnover occurs.

Actually I disagree. Although high turnover can be a result of a toxic work environment, in many cases its a result of the natural transition of a company in which standards are beginning to be set regarding quality of work and firm KPIs, which can be difficult to some that are not used to be measured

Managing negative emotions at work is important for both leaders and employees, as it can impact performance, the quality of relationships and the work environment. It's needed: That the leadership has self-awareness and self-management, recognizing its own vulnerabilities in order to provide greater security for all and an improvement in the organizational climate, clear and open communication with the team, clear expectations regarding the performance and behavior of the team, helping team members team to develop their emotional skills, fostering psychological safety and mental health and wellness programs.

Imagine the following analogy: That a team is like an orchestra, and the leader is the conductor. Just as a musician needs to tune his instrument to ensure it is in perfect condition, leaders must invest in the individual development of their team. Therefore, the conductor not only leads the musicians, but also ensures that they communicate with each other, encouraging collaboration and defining a clear vision, inspiring the team and ensuring that everyone is on the same page to achieve the goals. When all the musicians are tuned, coordinated and led assertively, the result is an incredible concert that resonates with the audience. Likewise, a well-managed and motivated team is reflected in the delivery of results.

The absence of genuine teamwork is the major introduction to a decreased performance, which is one of the signs of team conflicts. Before an organisation experiences decreased performance, they must have been undergoing either a known or unknown weak phase of teamwork. Once the team of an organisation is weak, the productivity will definitely flop and fall, causing a decline in the workforce, leading to decreased performance. To maintain and improve performance, training and development for the team must be prioritized along with feedback while monitoring and measuring performance outcomes.

Decreased performance can also be a result of two different factors. One os team conflict but the other is the shift between the start up stage and the commitment and drive a small group has and the corporate stage in which people are starting to get too comfortable at their positions and they lose their drive and edge.

I've learned that one sign of team conflict is there being no obvious visible signs of 'healthy' conflict. If no-one is disagreeing publicly, if everyone is nodding along and seeming aligned, if there isn't any friction because everyone appears to agree with the same course of action.... that's a sign that the conflict may be under the surface, upspoken due to lack of psychological safety, or happening outside the room. Some of the best teams I've been part of indexed high on healthy conflict.

Reduced participation: Another sign of employees impacted by conflict is disinterest or reduced participation in organisations' activities like meetings, discussions, or collaborative projects. Employees may feel that their opinions or ideas are not valued or respected, or that their ideas are not being heard. Such assumptions can lead to disengagement with the organisation. In order to prevent disengagement, leaders must identify and not overlook any employee who is taking a back seat. An open-minded discussion with active listening will reassure the employee that he is valued and cared for. Before the issue blows out of proportion, leaders can tackle the underlying problem.

Something we should remember before jumping into any recommendations for a solution, is that these “signs” are the symptoms of a “problem” (“team conflict”), in order to effectively solve the situation, we need to start with a root cause analysis to understand why we have those signs in our team. For example, if our sign is “Poor Communication”, is it just because of a lack of governance? Or because the fact of being multicultural and located across different countries is adding complexity in the effective communication?. Your team has its own characteristics, so I would start from understanding the cause of the problem and then moving to a brainstorming and select the strategy/solution that better fits your problem and your team.
