What is the role of artificial intelligence in telecommunications?

AI is game changer for network design, optimization and planning. Network design and optimization are generally classified as a set of niche skills requiring years of experience to be called an expert in the area. At Ericsson, we use AI to improve cell throughput gain, energy saving in RAN, detect sleeping cells in the network, and predict power failures at cell sites and so much more. This is certainly one area, which shall see remarkable progress in the years to come with AI network operations. Combining telco-domain & AI knowledge is a win-win both for operators, vendors as well as end customers otherwise it's almost impossible to manually optimize the complex telecom networks in the years to come.

1. Proactive Optimization Through Predictive Analytics: Drawing from my experience, I've seen the power of AI's predictive analytics in anticipating network behavior. This capability allows us to take proactive optimization measures, staying ahead of potential issues. 2. Telecom networks can never go down. If they do, people die and that's the reality. Using AI to detect and prevent network failures is going to be one if the biggest and best things that CSPs can do with AI. It will allow them to achieve 5 9s of reliability or better.

What is the role of artificial intelligence in telecommunications? Data Analysis and Monetization: Data Analytics: AI processes vast amounts of data generated by telecom networks, extracting valuable insights that can inform business strategies and decision-making. Monetization Strategies: AI helps telecom providers develop new services and pricing models by identifying opportunities based on user behavior and preferences. 5G Network Management: Dynamic Spectrum Management: AI plays a crucial role in managing and optimizing the dynamic spectrum allocation in 5G networks, ensuring efficient use of resources.

Network optimization is mostly data driven. Where an engineer fetches the data point or counters from the network , then formulate it and after that decision making is done based on data. This entire process is very tiring and time consuming. By using AI most of this things can be done more precisely and accurately. It saves lot of time and instant implementation so that our KPI cannot be bad for longer period of time impacting users. Industry over the years came up with different solutions like SON (Self Organising Network) and recently thing called RIC ( RAN intelligence controller) by using AI we can over simplify process and reduce time to optimize network.

I agree with the statement. AI plays a crucial role in telecommunications by enhancing network performance through real-time monitoring, analysis of data, and proactive solutions for optimization and security, particularly in intricate environments like SATCOM. The ability of AI to handle tasks such as bandwidth allocation, routing, and cybersecurity contributes significantly to the efficiency and reliability of telecommunications networks.

One of the main challenge lies in the wireless part of the network and the most essential and needed play of AI could be in RF optimization. Even we have many advancements in RF, like MU-MIMO, beam forming, Massive MIMO, advanced OFDM techniques, challenge lies in the indeterministic RF characteristics affected by factors like line of sight, RF fading, weather conditions, interference, etc . AI algorithms can essentially help to predict the scenarios based on some constant measuring of these parameters and adjusting the power, channel allocations, cell size, etc which can provide optimized and controlled RF characteristics and help in achieving predicted bandwidth and guaranteed data rate.

One role note mentioned here is the one of predictive maintenance. AI can analyze several component/device parameters to infer the remaining life of a given component/device.

Let's explore how AI takes flight in various aspects of telecommunications: AI algorithms analyze atmospheric changes, satellite positioning shifts, and network demand to predict disruptions before they occur. Historically Communications Service Providers(CSPs) have consistently ranked at the bottom end of customer satisfaction in global industries surveys. Customer experience management in telecom is one area where AI has been used extensively in last 5-7 years. Today Some of the key use cases where AI use-cases have greatly improved overall Net Promotor Score (NPS) for CSPs are: 1. Detect unseen anomalies and provide recommendation automatically 2. Accurately predict degradation in throughput and automated resolution 3. Predict cells which are going to sleep in a day or two and automatically recommend appropriate action and many more With upcoming generative AI based use-cases, CSPs can further improve end-user customer experience!

Using AI for customer experience is something that Telecoms have been using for a while. They have been using automated assistants instead of humans to solve basic issues and answer basic questions. However for me, it's mostly just a frustrating process because I end up having to speak to a human anyway and I just wasted a whole bunch of time. I do think that with LLM and Generative AI, these sorts of systems will get better but right now they simply aren't there. CSPs have to be careful not to annoy their customers or deliver poor customer service as a result of a bad AI tool for customer experience.

AI chat bots can be great addition to customer service which has evolved significantly over the years and now has been reliable solution for the industry. Just recently, work is started in 3GPP to create specifications to be followed across the globe that would enable AI/ML processes to be supported with full interoperability among all the components of a 5G RAN system. Some of the early use-case could be around load balancing, mobility optimization and network energy saving as well as use of generative AI in RAN.

What if we could automatically measure network traffic and easily turn parts of the network on or off and move workloads depending on what was in use? I see AI in cloud, edge and data center networks for Telecoms to make the biggest impact because of this. We have to remember that software runs on hardware (I know, duh, but it has to be said) so this network hardware is a must and being able to easily contract what is on/off at any given time through AI will be a game changer for carbon footprints.

I started as an Engineer at Verizon in 2004, it was the year they launched FiOS. I worked in central offices adding new fiber equipment, most of which replaced the copper equipment but we simply never went and took it out because we were so focused on adding. After a few years we realized we could save a lot of energy (and money) by simply unplugging the old copper stuff that wasn't in use. My job became to write SQLs to figure out what equipment was no longer in use (or had customers we could move to fiber) and have it unplugged. Just by unplugging equipment, Verizon saved 178 M kWh and $18M over the equipment lifecycle and that was just one state! Imagine the worldwide impact of something simple like this.
