There's plenty of specific tools for this, but it's also easy to do in any quiz/survey software that allows for branching, such as Qualtrics or Google Forms. I like the model of making a branch after a wrong answer that gives additional information, explains why the prior answer was wrong, then gives a few additional samples to test the new understanding. At its core, this is an instructional design problem that requires careful thought and construction. It's more time-consuming to build an adaptive assessment, but worth it!

Gamification is one of my favorite things, but so few do it well. This has led to a relatively negative perception industry-wide as gamification "doesn't work", when the truth is that few folks design their content around being engaging for gamification. The trick that I've found is that you must weight the gamification elements and learning content equally from a design perspective. Not every gamification model works for all content or group of learners. Badging works well with a clear skill tree and motivation for moving up (See Salesforce Trailhead!) while something like a virtual escape room works great for more nebulous content.

Simulations are an incredible tool for teaching. While I've seen simulations run from incredibly complex (virtual reality headsets medical equipment) to incredibly simple (role play in a room), the end result is that learners lock in content quickly. Simulation and gamification can go hand in hand, and both require careful planning and execution to have an effective outcome.
