What are the most effective strategies for performance evaluations?

I find SMART plan is effective for any project and also for daily operation. To evaluate someone's performance, this is the duty of the team leader to set the goal clear and understandable by each and every team members. To me it is drawing back a line from the goal to the start point and then by implementing various technics to make the line straight to achieve in shortest time. When a leader evaluates a team member's performance, this would his responsibility to evaluate whether as a leader he has given the team member enough support and training.

A conversa sobre indicadores de desempenho nunca é algo fácil, no entanto o primeiro passo para isso é definir com o colaborador uma periodicidade de feedback e lembrar que o feedback deverá ser em sua grande maioria em 360º, também gerando a oportunidade de receber uma avaliaçã do seu desempenho para com a equipe, não esquecendo de definir objetivos e metas claras e mensuráveis.

The line managers/ reporting superiors may partner with the performance evaluation system. Training is an ongoing process and continuous improvement would ensure quality enhancement. As leaders we often think that employees know how they are performing. But they can’t read our minds. If they aren’t meeting expectations, we assume they know that as well based on our attitude toward them. Neither is an effective way of communicating with them our feelings about their ability to do their jobs. It’s takes time to provide an evaluation but it’s worth it. The employee will have tangible feedback that they will return to when they need reassurance or direction in your absence. If it is never done, they may feel they have no goals, or that they aren’t important enough for you to take the time to do this for them. It is as much for the employee as it is for the manager. They should be done regularly for all of us!

People need to feel seen, heard and understood for them to perform. The other aspects of performance management only become relevant if and when this fundamental aspect is in place. Human beings need to feel acknowledged and that they belong to actually do their best. To think about ‘performance’ in any other way not only dehumanises the workforce but it is a false economy. Ask subordinates for their confidence (1-10), that their supervisor cares about them, the mission, and organizational values. What might improve their assessment by 1 or 2 points? Examples to support personal opinions or impressions are important. Are individual team members being developed? What are obstacles to team performance that you might influence? What are their personal or professional aspirations? How can you help?

Los seis puntos descriptos son importantes siempre que se mantenga el balance de cuanto aportar de cada uno de ellos considerando cada persona en forma particular. Siempre hay que poner primero al individuo y adaptar los objetivos a sus fortalezas y que pueda entregar su mejor version. Agregar algunos objetivos que desafien sus debilidades.
