Show what the desired result/product is already capable of and what it will soon be able to do further.

In the columns the project team should discuss about the status, faced issues, and actions to be taken against those issues. In the meeting itself you should generally talk about these topics, note the divers opinions in the table and define next steps. Furthermore should the budget plan be drawn separately, best also in a table format. In the table should be the is-situation on budget compared to the target budget for the time spent as well as a visualization of the calculated difference (reserve/behind).

Over the previous 2.5 decades of leading large projects and transformation programs, I believe that the most effective method to report status is to use your contract/SOW and match the report with what both sides have agreed upon. While conventional templates appear studious and informative, they seldom reflect reality on the ground, and, more importantly, they do not assist leadership in making decisions or resolving obstacles on the ground. The ideal way to report on a project's progress is via a status report that reflects what is established and agreed upon in a SOW—schedule, deliverables, $$-burn, invalidated assumptions, change management, risk log updates, and commitments from both parties.
