Let it be a Dialogue, not a Monologue. While everything else has been mentioned, do make sure you are listening to how your audience wants to see the message and what would they like to know more about. Talk to your audience through surveys, conversations, opinions and polls. But keep the communication two-way. In one of the organizations I worked, system feature updates were better received on Yammer than E-Mails as the Target audience preferred little informal way of interacting. Please do actively listen to your audience.

While the previous steps are a great way of ensuring that your plan works, all plans can fail. In case of a failure, the first step is to find walk back every step and evaluate how it was performed and what errors might have occurred. It is crucial not to stop at the first error one encounters but to walk back all the way to the definition stage as every consequential error might have been a result of poorly chosen premises. Make yourself honest and be willing to start from scratch if that is where the issue is found to be. There is no point in polishing garbage through many steps, the principle garbage in, garbage out applies. Often it is very useful to consult someone who was not involved in the planning to determine obvious flaws.

Evaluation of a communication plan isn't the final step. It's the first step toward the next iteration of the strategy. Taking stock of what's worked, what hasn't, and what needs to be improved and sustained, allows you to learn lessons, adjust, refine the approach for next time and set out to start again and improve. In addition, it's a chance to exercise accountability for all involved and determine if the objectives are still the right ones. Are they still measurable, achievable and impactful? Or do they need adjusting too?
