What do you do if your real estate internship doesn't transition into a full-time job?

Create and preserve industry relationships. I go to real estate events, join associations for professionals, and follow contacts from my internship. Networking keeps you current about employment and helps you find fresh prospects.

Keep growing and sharpening your skill set. To increase my credentials, I pursue certifications and take extra classes in real estate finance or property management. By honing your abilities, you appeal more to employers looking for new hires.

I would ask the Hard questions to the agent who hired you in the first place. Why did they not want hire you back? Is it because they don’t have enough business? Was it lack of initiative on your part? By having the honest answers to these questions, it will enable you to reassess any skills that you are deficient in, or perhaps you should seek internship or jump in to real estate sales at a different brokerage that is more supportive in training, clear in their expectations, and hold you accountable. This industry requires a lot of grit and about six to 12 months of savings to pay your necessary bills before succeeding.

Leverage Your Internship Experience Highlight the skills & experiences gained during your internship on your resume and in interviews. Even if it didn't lead to a job, it provided valuable industry experience. Explore Related Fields Real estate skills can be transferable to related fields such as PMS, urban planning, RE finance & construction management. Freelance or Start a Business If you're entrepreneurial, consider freelancing in areas like property management, real estate marketing, or consulting. Remember, many career paths are non-linear, and your first job may not be in your ideal position or company. What's important is gaining experience, building your network & staying proactive in your job search.

Investigate your options for a future in real estate. I am looking into opportunities in commercial real estate, property management, and investing. By trying new things, you can find possibilities that play to your abilities and interests.

If you are truly interested in real estate, there will be an opportunity for you! Exploring options beyond your internship company is key. The real estate industry offers diverse roles in commercial development, residential projects, urban planning, and more. Transferable skills gained from a real estate internship, such as market analysis, client communication, project management, negotiations, and contracts are important in most real estate jobs! If you do a broad search of real estate jobs/opportunities in your area you would be surprised to find many interesting jobs, even ones you've never heard of.

Don't shy away from asking for critical feedback—it's how you grow! Plus, this is a perfect time to ask for referrals or recommendations. Your mentors can provide valuable insights and support that can help you tailor your resume and ace future interviews. Take advantage of their experience to boost your career in real estate!
