What are common mistakes when developing counterarguments?

We hear false dilemmas constantly, but know from our experience that many of the issues we disagree on are far more complex and nuanced. For me personally, the worst false dilemmas today is the binary choice of “Oppressor - Oppressed” that is common and more or less unchallenged in the academy. This choice creates an “us vs. them” model. The choice is false. Humanity is too rich and multi-variant to be tucked into this particular false dilemma.

The example given about false dilemma (alternative energy) is quite relevant in the present scenario. Believing and arguing that there are only these two alternatives makes the debate highly polarised, it removes any chance of collaboration and innovation. This is clearly evident in the world today as the world divided in opposite extremes: one group believing that fossil fuels are pure evils and need to be stopped today and the other just flatly junking climate change. I find this trap used in most political debates as well stalling any chance of real progress.

Instead of talking about just two options, try looking at many different possibilities or ways of doing things. By talking about things this way, we make sure everyone's ideas are heard and avoid making decisions based on limited choices. For example, the company is faced with the choice of either closely monitoring every step of employees' work (micromanagement) or giving them complete freedom without any oversight. Instead of sticking to these extremes, the company opts for a middle ground. They encourage employees to take charge of their tasks independently but also set up regular check-ins. This approach ensures that employees have the freedom to work efficiently while still receiving support and guidance when necessary.

Again, being an old fellow I have learned over the years, regardless of the topic, in today's climate, making statements usually leads to combative ends. It was less so, during my professional career but did happen with some regularity. Hence starting a discussion is a very fragile situation. My solution to this was reasonably successful. First, I found that the elimination of "Always" or "Never" from my vocabulary was very helpful. Second, when I started a conversation about an issue, " Rightly or wrongly, this is my view of the situation. What are your thoughts?". When the person or group responded, I made sure I understood their position and simply asked questions from that point to see if there was some common ground between us.

There can be more ways to solve or look at things than two. For eg, if you want to sort out a fight between two people, you will eventually ask one of them to surrender and ask for forgiveness and the other to forgive. The third option could be there of how both the parties acted right only through the perspective and knowledge that they individually carry. The clash took place because of a misunderstanding. The misunderstanding can be avoided if both of them start to respect each other's opinions!

Ensure your facts come from a reliable source that can be cited. Bloggers and online-only pubs do not carry the same level of credibility as established & subscription-based news orgs.

Humans are generally TERRIBLE at conceptualizing second-order effects (let alone 3rd, 4th, etc.) which means that anything beyond the simplest of problems will always be hastily generalized for the sake of being able to conceptualize it at all. The power comes in understanding and appreciating that you are in fact oversimplifying to give space for other people to help add color to your idea. When you are developing generalizations and then defending them because they become pillars in your argument, you aren't actually attempting to approach the truth - you're trying to "win" a debate. And I suppose that gets to the crux of the whole matter...all arguments and counterarguments would be well served in search of the truth, not a win

Unfortunately, this technique is used to great effect by the media. The one anecdotal story often gains more media coverage than any amount of data because it personalizes the issue. The one story may be the exception, but can be viewed as the norm as it is pumped through media outlets.

An additional stumbling block in crafting counterarguments is the hasty generalization, where a conclusion is drawn from insufficient or biased evidence. For instance, arguing against immigration by claiming that all immigrants are criminals or terrorists lacks validity and support, potentially conveying a sense of prejudice or irrationality. To circumvent the hasty generalization, it's crucial to substantiate claims with sufficient and reliable evidence, steering clear of sweeping or extreme statements. This approach not only upholds the credibility of the counterargument but also fosters a more reasoned and evidence-based discussion.

This form of reasoning can appear illogical or dogmatic, as it fails to provide external validation. In my perspective, arguments should be grounded in independent and verifiable evidence, not just assertions or beliefs. Avoiding circular reasoning is crucial for maintaining logical coherence and credibility in an argument. It's essential to build arguments on evidence that stands apart from the conclusion, ensuring that the reasoning process is both sound and persuasive. This approach fosters more logical, convincing, and rational discourse, crucial for effective argumentation.

In this type of reasoning, the argument essentially goes around in a circle, with the conclusion just restating a form of the initial assumption. It provides no actual evidence and fails to prove anything other than what is already assumed at the beginning. The structure of circular reasoning is as follows: Premise Assumes the Conclusion: The argument begins with a premise that already includes the conclusion or depends on the truth of the conclusion. Conclusion Restates the Premise: The conclusion of the argument is what the premise assumes, without providing new evidence or reasoning. Lack of Actual Proof: The argument doesn’t provide real evidence; it just reiterates the initial assumption.

Additionally, employing circular reasoning undermines the credibility of your argument by creating a self-referential loop. It fails to engage with opposing viewpoints or consider alternative perspectives, diminishing the overall strength of your position. To strengthen your counterarguments, strive for logical coherence and rely on well-founded evidence that can withstand scrutiny from diverse perspectives. This approach enhances the robustness of your reasoning and fosters a more persuasive and open-minded discourse.

Another example that comes to my mind, "I'm a good driver because I've never been in an accident, and I've never been in an accident because I'm a good driver." To avoid circular reasoning, ensure your premises can stand independently and aren't dependent on the conclusion being true. Seek diverse sources of evidence and reasoning that collectively support your argument without creating a circular loop. It's about building a solid foundation for your assertions.

A key to avoiding the circular reasoning mistake is to do some self analysis. Circular reasoning becomes a good fall back in absence of critical thinking. It becomes a mental health issue when one becomes so emotionally connected to an idea we can't evaluate other facts, information, arguments. A way to begin to break this habit or tendency is to become more well versed on various opinions and evaluate them on their own merit not just as a way to perpetuate your current beliefs. It also helps to do some self-reflection and ask yourself, 'why am I so convinced this is true, I can't hold healthy conversations about other person's equally impassioned beliefs?' It's also helpful to ask oneself, how can I not be controlled by limiting beliefs

Ad hominems: Attacking character instead of logic is a logical fallacy and erodes credibility. 4. Ignoring evidence: Acknowledge and address opposing viewpoints, even if you disagree. 5. The best way to develop a counterattack is to know your opposition’s arguments as well as you know your own. Most people tend to focus on how correct their point of view is, rather than acknowledging the opposition had valid points that identify with their supporters. However, by understanding their arguments, you can identify the weaknesses in their arguments and systematically dismantle them. By doing so, you may be able to persuade more individuals to your point of view.

A counter argument is meant to either add a perspective, or to diminish/discredit a statement. To ensure that I don’t commit any of the fallacies mentioned, I do my best to practise a few skills: Always listen actively, taking notes. I find it useful to fact check before responding (never ‘react’, always respond, which requires you to question your ideas and potential biases). Always address the issue, never the person. Get your opponent involved. I find it helpful to have declared ‘talking space’. One person is allowed to develop their point for 5 minutes uninterrupted, before the other person responds. Try to find arguments that support the opposing view. This shows you the shortcomings and potential fallacies in your opponent’s views.

First examine the premise, then your goal. Before you engage in an argument, evaluate whether it is about an issue worth your time and effort, whether the person you would be countering is remotely responsive to logic, and what could the possible repercussions be as a result of the engagement. If your goal is to champion your position to an audience that is open-minded then, indeed, avoid the referenced rhetorical obfuscations. If your goal is to sunder a minority opinion by whatever means necessary, then the methods noted are not mistakes, they are the very tools called for in assembling the mob.

1. Don't practice online - social media doesn't lend itself to constructive conversation. 2. Read a book about logic, and then read a solid, timeless philosophy book (Aristotle's "Metaphysics", for example), and stick to it until you have a good handle on the main arguments. This trains the brain to argue the way weights train our muscles to move, lift, etc. 3. Treat in-person debates with others like onions: Peel away layer by layer, and gauge the other's ability to listen to, process and reverberate your arguments. If you notice they don't really get what you're saying, or spew plenty of fallacies, leave them be. Make sure you try to understand their perspectives, too. 4. Most importantly, remember that we're not purely rational!
