What are the best ways to integrate player choice into racing games?

A MEANINGFUL choice is discernable and integrated. Discernable - A choice is discernable when players understand it's a choice. Even better if they can see what's on the table. Better yet if each choice is enticing/risky/compelling in their own right. E.g. you take the '08 Mustang because you know that the money you save early might help you catch a sale on suspension mods earlier in your career. Integrated - A choice is integrated when the consequences of the choice manifests in game outcomes. It's better when those outcomes fulfill the promises they make. Better yet when the choices result in complex plausible results. E.g. Your Mustang gets you invites to exclusive tracks.

Allowing players to choose their vehicles is a great way to give players autonomy, but it only works if the user interface gives the proper feedback and a player can feel the difference on a track and be able to easily switch out different vehicles.

Se é jogo tem que ser todos iguais. Nunca joguei, minha experiência é ser campeão em Interlagos em 2003 com um 550Spyder e com os Formula Vee que projetei e correm até hoje. Em Interlagos usaria 1,5 grau de cambagem negativa na roda dianteira direita e zero na esquerda e 0,5 grau de divergência na roda traseira direita e 0,5 grau de convergência na roda traseira esquerda. Em Interlagos, a única curva para a direita é o Laranjinha e é só olhar os pontos de tângência. A curva não tem visibilidade e todos fazem mal. O Bico de Pato não faz diferença porque um F1 e uma Kombi velha vão fazer em velocidades parecidas. E logo vem o Mergulho e a Junção e é pé embaixo. Com o carro todo "errado" para fazer curvas para a direita o tempo vem.

Besides choosing a pre-set vehicle you can tap into the play type of crafting. Give the players the options and agency to design and craft their very own vehicles. This can be overwhelming so you have to consider a good UX flow, and probably some presets that can be modified completely or just slightly. Once the racing starts, and the player gets to know the vehicle and the obstacles I would tap into Nurture play mechanics where we can tweak some car mechanics by caring for our vehicle. Adding better fuel, oil, energy, tires, aerodynamics... etc. Tap into Crafting and nurture play mechanics to optimize your competitive edge within a racing game. That should increase player choices and a good feeling of agency :)

If we are talking about a single race then the track decides all other choices. I should pick the vehicle and decide the driving mode. My style will be shaped according to the driving mode.

Piloto não escolhe pista, mas se é para escolher tem que ter curvas de alta que é o que separa. Curva de baixa, tanto faz um F1 ou um Kombi velha que vão fazer com 40 km/h de diferença. O F1 não passa a Kombi velha porque não tem velocidade e a Kombi dá uma piaba nele.

Ao escolher uma pista o jogador tem que ter em mente que cada traçado tem as suas peculiaridades e dificuldades e sendo assim, ser expert em um dado circuito, não lhe garante ser um bom jogador. Desta forma, treine no máximo de pistas possíveis e adquira o maior volume possível de informações sobre os traçados, pois tendo "intimidade" com o maior volume de pistas possíveis, você estará apto sair vitorioso com mais frequência.

From my experience the best way to engage the player choice into the track is by having multiple routes to choose from, with the ones that gives more advantages(shortcuts) requiring a higher level of skill to be reached.

Players will take optimality over style. If you want to make your racing game support different play styles, you have to make those style choices interesting. If the game's reward structure centers around purchasing cars and upgrades, players would likely take the drag race over the circuit if the dollars-per-minute is favorable. Or take the autocross challenges if their setup results in better win rates at those challenges. To make it more interesting, you could 1) create achievement tracks that give different rewards based on those choices to encourage wider content engagement - OR - 2) honor their choice by gating off content based on their choice The choice of style is interesting if there are results/consequences.

Apparence 110% should have some customizability. Aside from that Style is partially related to the game mode and map, off road favorable cars won't perform as well in a city map. Alternatively a beater won't win in a race with speed and cost in mind. However you need this choice to give players the illusion of choice, they can't just play through it blindly. Otherwise it comes down to balancing and game mechanics to make it winnable whatever your style while still giving you an "edge" depending on your play style. The problem is making it so that their choice is still valid while not being too overshadowed. Make shortcuts for tougher cars when there's a runway for the speedsters. Allow for choice variants in your maps and game modes.

O estilo de corrida de cada jogador pode estar diretamente ligado ao tipo de carro e traçado que o jogador escolher - carros mais traseiros exigem um tipo de reação, da mesma forma que carros mais dianteiros exigem uma outra abordagem de pilotagem. Por outro lado jogos onde a corrida se dá nas ruas, obstáculos não previstos; carros em sentido contrário ou cruzando a pista, exigem um nível de atenção ao que ocorre ao redor do carro muito maior. Sendo assim, analise os objetivos que você deseja atingir e molde seu estilo de pilotagem.

Não entendi bem a pergunta. Só sei que quanto mais se pisa no da direita e o quanto menos se pisa no do pedal do meio, o tempo vem. É simples, não sei porque teorizam tanto.

Un choix sympa qui permet une immersion plus forte pour un jeu de simulation. Moins important pour de l’arcade ou simarcade. Encore faut il que la stratégie ait un réel impact au gameplay

Estratégia é coisa para o engenheiro responsável pelo carro. Quem ganha a corrida é o carro e o engenheiro, o piloto tem que fazer o menor número de besteiras possível para o carro não perder. Uma Le Mans tem que ser dupla, um é o coelho que coloca o carro para a frente e o outro é o "carregador de piano" que mantém a colocação. Em corrida curta não tem estratégia, é pé no fundo. Em F1 tem que saber sobre os pneus que no final decidem.

Choosing mode can be very interesting and funny. A lot players can meet in their desired and favorite modes and sometimes they can try different modes and continue to play the game!

Não tenho a menor ideia do que seja. Só sei que se for carro de rodas abertas como Formulas, não pode ter contato. Em carro de roda coberta dá fácil fazer qualquer curva se apoiando no carro de fora.

Der kleine arme Rennfahrer, der mit seinem Ruhm zu den besten gehören kann, die virtuellen Preisgelder könnte man dazu nutzen um eine Merchplattform zu schaffen und dort das virtuelle Preisgeld in echte Prämien umzuwandeln, wie z.b gesponserte Rennanzüge, Helme, batches ect. aus dem Rennsportbereich.

"Player choice integration" is a solution, but what is the goal/problem? - Do you want interesting choice to replicate authenticity? Maybe look at MechWarrior and the way they handle wear and tear to inform how players drive. - Do you want to add a layer of strategy? What are the costs, benefits, risks, rewards, consequences, and complexities players need to balance in their choices? What is the complex problem they're solving for and how will the outcomes manifest along the spectrum of success? - Is it about reinforcing the driving skills? How do you disincentivize the degenerative strategies that spoil simulations? How do you make it so that good/proper driving creates results?

The racing platform allows spectators to enter the game and view the racer's game remotely. Racers to see how many spectators they have generated and who is interested in their race while hearing them cheer or muting the spectators for better concentration.
