In my experience, honesty and transparency are fundamental as a financial advisor. Clients trust us with their financial future, and any deception can quickly erode that trust. When doing forensic work, I found that most of my clients didn't value honesty or transparency the same way I did. It was difficult to stay true to myself and my own values, while also adapting to the environment I was in. Through a lot of trial and error it eventually clicked that our expectations were different. My clients didn't expect transparency from me, and so they didn't trust or respect it. To "meet them where they're at" I had to adjust my approach. I learned that intentional vagueness, cynicism, and humor worked a lot better in building trust with these individuals. When I worked for a large semiconductor company, a customer once told me that he enjoyed working with me more than anyone else. When I asked why, he said that everyone else was trying to give him exactly what he wanted, and that I was the only person who pushed back when I thought he needed something else, even if it's not what he asked for. He appreciated the fact that I care about his true benefit more than I cared about him liking me or buying right now. I had no problem telling him that what we have is not what he needs. When a customer feels that you care about them, they trust you. Just keep in mind: the customer is NOT always right.
