Set them up to succeed by being the lead on a project. They will certainly need some mentorship, however leaders should be embracing opportunities to mentor and guide the next generation. Some of what they learn will be spot-on for their career development goals and some of what they learn by doing will be valuable knowledge for the team and company. They are interns! Give them stuff to own. Plan times to check in a coach them. Then let them roll! So much learning is possible as an intern. Risk is relatively low. They can contribute great work. Give them as much rope as they wish, then pull them in when needed. And of course, keep an eye on them so you can guide them. Allowing them to safely fail is ok... but be careful of letting the get too far off track, as learning by success is also effective.
