How do you present DMAIC results to decision-makers?

It is very important to know your audience and understand what success means to them before making any presentation. It is likely that you will lose their attention if they do not get the feel that your work has addressed their pain point. If the group is an experienced Six Sigma group, then a technical presentation might suffice, but if they are commercial stakeholders for example with very minimal process and continuous improvement experience, it is best to simplify your work and findings as much as possible with core focus on how you have solved their problem. That way you keep them engaged and everyone is likely to be happy by the end of the presentation!

To effectively present DMAIC results to decision-makers in the Six Sigma process, it's crucial to understand the audience, use visuals and data, align results with business objectives, highlight key achievements, provide before-and-after comparisons, discuss lessons learned, address risks and mitigations, quantify return on investment, provide a sustainability roadmap, recommend next steps, and engage in Q&A sessions. Showcase tangible improvements to gain their support, ensuring your presentation resonates and fosters understanding and buy-in.

I have often used an 'Executive Summary' or a four-blocker slide at the start most of the time, which allows us to present the most important content within a short amount of time and receive a decision from the steering committee of the project. These summary templates should include a short business case, problem data, an analysis of how we approached the problem, the improvement actions taken, and a visual representation of the before and after data or status

Always start your presentation with an overview that includes the problem statement/improvement opportunity, project objective(s), project scope and team details. Then, explain how you identified the problem and what the customers need in the Define phase. Then, talk about how you measured the current performance in the Measure phase. After that, explain how you looked at the data in the Analyze phase. Show the improvements made in the Improve phase. Finish by describing the steps taken to control the process in the Control phase. Finally, sum up the main findings, suggestions, and benefits of the project. Ask the audience for questions and feedback at the end.

I have found that simple PPT slides tend to help you have the attention of the audience. Use as less of text as possible; instead, include data wherever you can. Data speaks way louder than text! In my presentations I include easy-to-understand tables, charts and diagrams. Rememeber that your audience may not have the same expertise as yourself and may not be able to read the visuals you are displaying.

In my opinion, a project presentation should emulate a story to enhance engagement and understanding. By weaving a narrative, you can transform data into a relatable journey, capturing the audience's attention. Much like a story, it introduces characters (the project team), navigates challenges (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control phases), and builds suspense through setbacks and successes. This storytelling approach fosters emotional connection, aiding retention and making the information more memorable.
