How do you measure your team's performance?

It is widely recognized that there are many things inherently wrong with most of the performance appraisal systems in use. No matter how well defined the dimensions for appraising performance on quantitative goals are, judgments on performance are usually subjective and impressionistic. Managers often end up making arbitrary judgments. Ratings by different managers, and especially those in different units, are usually incomparable. What is excellent work in one unit may be unacceptable in another in the same company. Although managers are urged to give feedback freely and often, there are no built-in mechanisms for ensuring that they do so. Delay in feedback creates frustration.

While SMART goals are widely used and effective, an alternative approach to goal setting is the CLEAR framework. CLEAR stands for Collaborative, Limited, Emotional, Appreciable, and Refinable. This approach emphasizes the importance of collaboration, emotional engagement, and continuous refinement in goal setting. It encourages teams to work together, establish realistic limitations, connect emotionally with the goals, focus on appreciable milestones, and regularly refine and adjust objectives based on evolving circumstances. The CLEAR framework provides a more holistic and flexible approach to goal setting that considers the human aspect and promotes adaptability.
