When organizations implement supplier diversity and inclusion initiatives and they invest the required resources (i.e. experienced professionals who are granted the autonomy to effect change, an adequate program budget to hire talent to support the various elements of a program, and to secure the tools and technology needed to manage the capture and reporting of diversity spend), they are making deliberate actions to support the economic development of diverse communities, which is in alignment with corporate social responsibility goals and objectives.

Social Responsibility and Supplier Diversity, are not just a "feel good" CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) KPIs for procurement, but are high impact levers to boost not only company's top-line sale through a recognizable responsible logo, and through partnering with competitive and dependable MWBE (Minority Women Business Enterprise) vendors. The benefits goes beyond cost - working with MWBE vendors enable firms to avail corporate tax-breaks and other state level issued special company status.

ESR is a key KPI for some organizations and benefits the growth of economy. I believe Environmental and social responsibility must be centered as key KPI for all organizations as these practices can support local communities immensely and ensures economic development. Government regulations can also play a major criteria by ensuring these practices by providing incentives to the Big companies. Its a win-win situation as both, the Big companies are diversifying their risk and also encouraging employees to incorporate these practices and the small companies are getting benefitted in the process too.

The challenge is to extract, showcase and align stakeholders/sponsors on the tangible impact CSR and supplier diversity can provide to a firm - compared to say - Global sourcing or strategic quality management KPIs. But procurement executives, need to highlight the upside potential of the positive social impact that a company's successful CSR Vendor diversity can create - and then get recognized. Example - Patagonia, a well know Outdoor clothing brand, lead with Environmentally friendly operating process, which catapulted the brand in the forefront of responsible enterprise - so much so that other logos (not just in clothing industry), adopted similar CSR framework, to tap into environmentally focused Millennials, Gen Z and Gen Alphas.

Procurement leaders should aim at creating immediate and substantiated impact. The best approach is to identify 1 or 2 relevant CSR levers and align them to targeted diverse suppliers, to create a tandem impact. Example - Partnering with a Diverse/Minority owned vendor that specializes in circular economics, aligns squarely with CSR and Diversity KPIs, with potential to source competitive pricing. Conversely, the supplier diversity program could be strengthened through increased engagement with individual suppliers to improve their resiliency and ability to deliver good and services.

More than sophistication, riddled with latest AI/ML buzz, a tool that can quickly identify and measure change impact, should be considered - this can be simply and effectively achieved through Excel (...yup...). Example - An excel file can easily capture baseline TCO on spend and carbon emission, from using recycled raw material compared to virgin raw material. This positive delta can be normalized $/units and published in KPI reporting.

These are great examples of companies reporting on their ESG progress. Possibly there is a simpler way to look at social aspects of ESG- all of these companies have internal wellness programs and often support employee volunteer programs and DEI focus groups. When onboarding a new supplier ask what types of social programs offered within their organization and if they sponsor activities or are involved in local communities that they operate in. It’s more of a qualitative data set but it helps you learn quickly the type of partnership that you’re entering into.
